No. 16 Rangers stifle Adams State, push winning streak to 12 straight

DENVER, Colo. — The red hot No. 16 Regis University volleyball team rolled to its 12th straight victory on Friday, sweeping Adams State University in straight sets (25-14, 25-22 and 25-12) to open the team's home back-to-back.

Regis (13-4 overall, 9-0 RMAC) remain tied atop the conference standings with in-town rival MSU Denver, which held serve Friday with a sweep of Chadron State. Adams State University, which came into Friday's matchup on a mini two-match win streak, slip to 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the RMAC.

"Adams State is a good team and we weren't sure how they were going to come out tonight. They've taken some sets off some good teams, so we had to come prepared and we did that," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We got off to a great start in all three sets and I was proud of how the team performed tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED: As it has been during much of the Rangers' 12-match winning streak, their serving and passing ability set the stage Friday as the team finished with nine service aces; tied for their season high for a three-set match.

Regis had three aces in the first set, and a run of seven straight points with freshman defensive specialist Kylie Stremmel, to create all the cushion it's need in a 25-14 win in Set One.

Stremmel led all Regis players with three aces, while senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy added two aces.

"Our serve and passing was our serve and pass. Any time we weren't serving tough or passing well is when Adams State was making its runs," List said. "But when we served tough, we were able to create those gaps and it's hard for an opponent to overcome that."

If the Rangers weren't racking up aces, their offensive efficiency was just as lethal as Regis finished with 41 kills and hit .345 for the match, including marks of .500 (12-1-22) in Set One and .423 (14-3-26) in Set Three.

Regis also featured a balanced attack as six different players tallied four or more kills, led by graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral and sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis with nine kills apiece.

"When Amelia is going, things are good. And when you're able to get your middles involved, you're passing really well," List said. "I thought we did a great job of, if we weren't scoring off that first attempt, that we were getting (Adams State) out of sorts and receiving easier balls for Mara to distribute to 2-3 different hitters and not having to force to one hitter."

Senior setter Mara LeGrand would finish the evening with 27 assists and four kills of her own, while sophomore outside hitter Hannah Kepler notched eight kills, junior outside hitter Halle Theis tallied seven kills and senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink chipped in four kills to round out the Regis offense.

Defensively, Regis held Adams State to a .072 hitting percentage while earning a 7-3 advantage in total blocks and 33-26 edge in digs.Kennedy led all Rangers with 13 digs on Friday, while LeGrand added six.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to keep the win streak alive at 3 p.m. Saturday when they conclude a three-game home stand against New Mexico Highlands University.
