No. 16 Rangers conclude home stand with sweep of New Mexico Highlands

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team completed a dominating weekend on Saturday, knocking off New Mexico Highlands University in straight sets (25-12, 25-16 and 25-12) en route to the team's 13th straight victory.

Combined with their sweep of Adams State on Friday, the Rangers (14-4 overall, 10-0 RMAC) put together one of their most complete 48-hour performances of the season.

"I thought we played very clean and efficient (Saturday), didn't give up a lot of errors, and coming back after a match on Friday; we haven't put two matches together like that so I was proud of the team and our efficiency today," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List.

HOW IT HAPPENED: On a day where the Rangers never trailed, they dominated action from the opening serve against a rebuilding Cowgirls team (4-14 overall, 1-9 RMAC). Regis hit a sizzling .386 for the match, racking up 43 kills versus just nine attack errors.

Sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis paced all Regis players with 13 kills on a career-high .813 attack percentage (13-0-16), while pin hitters Halle Theis (nine kills) and Hannah Kepler (five kills) followed.

Senior setter Mara LeGrand and senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink each added five kills apiece, as well, to round out the balanced Rangers' attack.

"I thought our pin hitters, Hannah and Halle, did a good job of attacking with an attack mentality. It got a little soft at some points in the match, with tips and offspeed shots, but Hannah and Halle did a great job of going up and attacking the ball," List said.

LeGrand capped her strong performance with 31 assists and a team-leading 13 digs on Saturday as New Mexico Highlands consistently challenged the Rangers' setter to make the first touch and force defensive specialist Haley Kennedy (six assists, six digs) to handle some setting duties.

"Teams have done that, and will likely continue to try to do that, but we're always prepared for that. Mara does a great job digging and Haley gives a good bump set to our pins, who were attacking well," List said. "We have an offense to be able to handle that and I was proud of how our team executed it."

With the match under control, Saturday presented an opportunity for the Rangers to play a lot of their younger players as freshman middle blocker Braiziah Dixon earned her first collegiate start, while sophomore Emma Prentice and freshman Isabella Smith each saw two sets worth of action.

"The hard work our starters have put in up until this point enables us to play some of our younger players. And that's good for the program as a whole as we move forward," List said. "Being able to get those players experience is crucial and it's not easy to get on the court. They've been working hard and earned opportunities, while our starters did a nice job controlling the match to enable them to do that."

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with a 43-33 advantage in kills
  • New Mexico Highlands was limited to a .080 attack percentage (22-15-88)
  • The Rangers also won the blocking battle (8-1), led by LeGrand and Dixon with three total blocks apiece.
  • At the service line, Regis finished with eight aces. Kennedy and freshman Kylie Stremmel led the team with two aces.

UP NEXT: Following their three-match home stand, the Rangers now prepare to go back on the road for matchups against No. 21 Colorado School of Mines (7 p.m. Friday) followed by a trip east to Nebraska to face Chadron State College (12 p.m. Sunday).
