No. 16 Rangers have 13-game win streak end on the road against No. 23 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — Entering the evening on a 13-match winning streak, the No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team hit its first snag in the RMAC schedule on Friday, falling in three sets (25-19, 25-20 and 26-24) on the road against No. 23 ranked Colorado School of Mines.

The loss was the first for the Rangers (14-5 overall, 10-1 RMAC) in six weeks, dating back to early September, and it evened their season record against the Orediggers (15-5 overall, 10-2 RMAC) after defeating CSM in straight sets back on Sept. 7 in Denver.

"We have a ton of respect for Mines and they've improved a lot since we saw them at the beginning of RMAC play. They played a really good five-set match against MSU Denver last week, so we knew going in that they were clicking on all cylinders," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We had a little adversity to work through, missing one of our players, but we like the adversity know we'll face more of it in the future. This was a little taste of it and we'll learn from it."

HOW IT HAPPENED: After posting hitting percentage of .300 or higher in five of their previous seven matches, the normally efficient Rangers struggled to get the offense clicking on Friday as they were limited to 36 kills and a .173 hitting percentage.

Colorado School of Mines' tough serve (seven aces) and ability to keep rallies alive Friday (46-37 advantage in digs) contributed to the off night for a Regis offense that entered third in the RMAC in team hitting percentage.

"Mines does a really good job of getting other teams out of system. They are very offense oriented and that caused some issues for our defense, which then led to us not being able to distribute the ball as well as we wanted to," List said. "At the service line, they got us out of system quite a bit and they played very scrappy defense, as well."

Regis would have four different players tally eight digs to lead the way Friday in senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink, sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis, as well as the team's outside hitter duo of junor Halle Theis and sophomore Hannah Kepler.

Senior setter Mara LeGrand followed with three kills and 30 assists.

Defensively, senior libero Haley Kennedy led all players with 16 digs while Regis as a team posted a 10-6 advantage in total blocks.

And while the 10 total blocks is a strong number for a three-set match, List said that the Rangers know they left more potential points on the table Friday.

"I told the team after the game that 10 blocks is a great number for a three-set match, but Mines did score a lot of points off our block. Off our forearms, our hands; we just didn't seal the net very well," List said. "We had the opportunity to finish with a lot more blocks than we did."

UP NEXT: The Rangers will continue one of its more unique road trips of the 2022 season on Sunday when it heads out east to take on Chadron State College. First serve is scheduled for noon inside the Chicoine Center.

"A noon match on a Sunday kind of throws everyone's normal schedule off, but we're not the only ones facing it. Chadron isn't use to playing on Sunday afternoons either," List said. "They have a great venue and we've seemed to play well there. Coming off a loss, I think our team definitely be focused to get back on that winning streak."

And while the Rangers did not want to see their 13-game winning streak end, List said he is confident his team will learn from Friday's defeat and be better from it moving forward over the final seven matches of the RMAC regular season.

"Fortunately, we have a day to digest the loss and we know it's not the end of the world. We're still in the mix for a conference championship," List said. "Any time we've faced adversity or setbacks, we've definitely rebounded from it. We realize we have to work on some things and we'd rather face that right now then in about 3-4 weeks."
