Rangers apply offensive pressure but fall to CSU-Pueblo on the road

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team took on the #15 Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Sunday afternoon and lost a hard fought match, 2-0.

With the loss, the Rangers move to 4-6-1 overall, and 1-1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The ThunderWolves improve to 8-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the RMAC.

"I thought we came out with intensity and energy, moved the ball well, and up until the penalty it was a fairly back and forth game," said Regis head coach Taylor Diem.

How It Happened: The Rangers got the early start with a shot from Elias Taubo that missed up top in the second minute. A pair of shots from Vilhjalmur Kaldal in the 30th minute and Michael Jimenez in the 35th would be the Rangers' sole opportunities in the first half.

The ThunderWolves could not capitalize on their seven shots of the first 45 minutes, but would prove to be unwavering in their pursuit as a foul in the 18-yard box resulted in a penalty kick. Lamar Bynum would score his first of the match off a ball that found the lower left corner of the net.

The Rangers' offense kept pressing on and finished the second half with seven shots and two on goal from sophomore forward Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit but would remain fruitless.

Lamar Bynum would score his second of the night in the 50th minute off a shot to the bottom right of the net.

"I thought in the second half we came out alright but their second goal deflated us a little. I thought we put them under a lot of pressure late in the game but didn't have the quality in the final third to get back into the game," said Diem.

Up Next: The Rangers continue conference play on Thursday, Oct. 6, with a match at home against Colorado Christian University.

"We have a massive game for us this week in CCU so we don't have time to dwell on past results. The conference is all over the place right now so we feel like if we can put a few results together we'll be right back in the mix," said Diem.
