Rangers suffer heartbreak at home, settle for tie with CCU

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team took a late second-half lead but ended up having to settle for a 1-1 tie against cross-town rival Colorado Christian University.

The Rangers (4-7-2 overall, 1-2-2 RMAC) applied defensive pressure for the entirety of the first half, and netted the first goal of the match in the 67th minute. CCU (6-4-3 overall, 4-1-1 RMAC) equalized the game in the 89th minute.

"I was really pleased that we kept playing through the 80 minutes. CCU definitely made things difficult at times with how many numbers they put behind the ball," said head coach Taylor Diem. "The guys kept playing with resilience even when things got difficult. They kept their composure and made their way to the goal."

How It Happened: It was a quiet first half out at the Regis Turf Field as the Rangers held the Cougars to only five shots. Graduate goalkeeper Greg L'Hommedieu had three saves in the first forty-five minutes to help bolster the Ranger defense.

Sophomore Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 67th minute.

A beautiful long ball from Vilhjalmur Kaldal found Kevin Cela at the top of the 18-yard box where Cela fought through two Cougars and passed it backwards to an awaiting Carlson-Du Toit. Carlson-Du Toit wasted no time hammering the ball with his left foot past a diving Cougar goalkeeper and nailing the top right corner of the net.

"Kevin, I thought, raised the level when he came on. His willingness to run and get behind the back line was ultimately what led to a few of our chances in the second half," said Diem. "He found a little pocket of space and played into Rayhan and Rayhan finished it well. [Carlson-Du Toit] has been good in front of the goal for the last four or five games so I'm happy to see him on the scoresheet again."

CCU would come back to tie the match in the 89th minute with a goal from Grant Roloff, assisted by Gabe Roloff.
