No. 17 Rangers conclude final road trip of regular season with sweep of Adams State

ALAMOSA — Playing against an opponent and in a gymnasium that has given ranked opponents fits in recent years, the No. 17 ranked Regis University volleyball team maintained its focus and discipline Saturday, cruising to a road sweep of Adams State University inside Plachy Hall.

With the win, the Rangers (18-6 overall, 14-2 RMAC) completed an undefeated road trip and maintained pace with Colorado Mesa University for second place in the RMAC standings heading into the final week, while the loss dropped Adams State to 8-16 overall and 5-11 in the RMAC.

"We went into tonight focused. We know Adams State is a team that is capable of beating people, especially in their gym," said Regis head volleyball coach Joel List, noting the Grizzlies' win over No. 2 ranked Angelo State University a season ago. "Adams State had three of their usual starters out, so we got a look at a few new players we hadn't seen much this season. It took us some time in that first and second set to adjust, but then we played really well in Set Three and are happy to be walking out with a sweep."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Efficiency was the key word for the Rangers on Saturday, with the team racking up 51 kills versus just 17 errors on 111 swings (.306 attack percentage).

Defense keyed the Rangers' offensive success on Saturday as they finished with a 53-37 advantage in digs and were able to convert those saved rallies into points. Senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy proved to be the main catalyst as she finished with a match-high 20 digs.

"We were much more efficient with our hitting than we were Friday against New Mexico Highlands and that started with our defense and passing," List said. "Haley had some amazing digs and cover balls that sparked some of our energy. Those are plays that get our whole team going."

Senior setter Mara LeGrand, who had nine digs of her own, then orchestrated the Regis offense to near perfection as she finished with 41 assists and five kills while the Rangers as a team had three different players finish with double-digit kills, led by graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral with 12.

Saturday's performance capped a sensational 48 hours for Sowizral, who also added 12 kills on a .500 attack percentage on Friday. She'd finish the weekend with 24 kills on a blistering .526 hitting percentage.

"Klaudia had been going through a little bit of a slump, battling some illness, and she really focused on coming back this week, getting extra reps, watching more video and taking it on herself to get herself out of it," List said. "And her hard work has really paid off, which is what you're always happy to see as a coach. She has been able to broaden her offensive repertoire and her offensive numbers were amazing this weekend."

Joining Sowizral in double-figures for the Rangers was senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink with 11 kills and sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis with 10, while senior outside hitter Halle Theis capped a balanced evening for Regis with nine kills.

List also pointed to the play of true freshman Isabella Smith has a catalyst for the Rangers over the weekend as Smith, who posted 11 digs and two service aces on Friday, followed that performance by playing all six spots at outside hitter on Saturday, finishing with a kill, two service aces and seven digs.

"We didn't miss a beat with her in there and she did a really great job for us in her first real significant playing time this weekend," List said of Smith. "She played back row on Friday and all the way around tonight. She passed well, she dug balls and did exactly what we needed from her."

UP NEXT: Regis heads into the final week of the regular season still in the hunt for a RMAC regular season championship, tied for second place with Colorado Mesa — a half-game ahead of Colorado School of Mines in third — and two games back of No. 1 ranked MSU Denver.

The Rangers will look to finish the regular season on a crescendo and solidify their RMAC Tournament playoff seed this upcoming weekend when they welcome in Westminster College (7 p.m. Friday) and No. 19 Colorado Mesa (3 p.m. Saturday).

"The message to the team after tonight was: we have to get better every day in practice, in each set, and in each match we play this final week moving into the conference tournament," List said. "We want to be more consistent on offense, more consistent with our serve receive and defense. And those are areas we know we need to work on in order for us to beat these good teams at the end."
