Deem records season's first double-double in loss to Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The Regis University women's basketball team opened their 2022-2023 season deep in the heart of Texas against St. Mary's University on Friday, falling 77-74 to the Rattlers in the first of two games for the RMAC-Lone Star Conference Challenge.

How It Happened: The Rangers got off to a hot start in the first period, building a 17-9 lead while shooting 38 percent (7-for-18) from the field and limiting the tournament host Rattlers to just 23 percent (3-for-13).

Regis would lead by as many as 11 points after Athena Saragoza sank one of her four 3-pointers on the night (4-of-7) to open the second quarter. Saragoza led  four Rangers in double-figures with 15 points off the bench Friday.

St. Mary's would respond in the second quarter, though, as it mounted an 18-6 run to erase the deficit and retake the lead at 27-26 with 4:04 remaining before halftime.

Regis would trim the 34-28 halftime gap down to two points at 53-51 heading into a wild fourth quarter that saw six lead changes and five ties. The Rangers held their last lead, 69-68, lead as late as 2:14 remaining on a free throw by Sydney Speights

Unfortunately for Regis, the Rattlers responded with a 6-0 blitz to take a 74-69 lead with 32 seconds left and held on for the 77-74 final.

Regis senior forward Sam Deem produced a career-high 16 rebounds to lead all players Friday, adding 12 points to notch her first double-double of the season. On the glass, Deem grabbed six of her 16 rebounds on the offensive end. Her 16 rebounds topped her previous career-high of 13 set last season in a road win over Fort Lewis College (Dec. 17, 2021).

Game Notes:
  • Saragoza also went 4-9 in the field and 4-7 at the 3-point line
  • Junior guard Erin Fry scored 13 points and led the Rangers with five assists
  • Graduate student forward Erin Stroberg was the fourth Ranger in double-figures with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting
Up Next: The Rangers continue the RMAC-Lone Ctar Challenge against St. Edward's University on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 P.M. MST in San Antonio.
