Rangers fall by tight 81-75 final to begin west coast road trip

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Regis University men's basketball team opened its two-game California road trip on Saturday afternoon, falling by an 81-75 final to San Francisco State University out of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Regis (1-2 overall) had four players finish in double-figures, led by graduate student guard David Simental with 17 points, and shot 47 percent (27-for-57) from the field Saturday. But a strong second-half effort from the Gators (2-1 overall) would prove to be the difference.

Saturday's game was a rematch from a non-conference game between the two foes last November; a 78-75 win for the Rangers back on Nov. 18, 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Mirroring their first meeting in 2021, the Rangers and Gators played toe-to-toe much of the afternoon as neither team held a lead larger than six points in the first half, with Regis taking a slim 33-32 lead into the locker rooms.

Regis would hold its last lead of the game at the 8:30 mark of the second half on a free throw by graduate student forward Jas Singh, and were tied at 57-57 with 7:11 remaining, before the Gators were able to string together a 9-2 run to create a 66-59 cushion with just over five minutes to play.

After trailing by as many as 11 points, the Rangers made one final push to cut the deficit to five at 76-71 with 1:05 remaining on a layup by junior guard Aidan Sevilla, but were unable to inch any closer as SFSU held on for the 81-75 final.

Regis shot 50 percent in the second half (14-for-28), but were unable to keep pace with a high-scoring Gators team as they tallied 49 second-half points while shooting 67 percent (20-for-30) from the floor over the final 20 minutes.

Senior combo guard Aaron Bokol notched his second double-double of the early going with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while redshirt junior Eddy Egun (13 points) and Sevilla (12 points) joined Simental in double-figures.

Junior guard CJ Reed and sophomore forward Brayden Carter added eight points and six points, respectively, to help pace the Regis offense.

GAME NOTES:
  • The game featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes
  • SFSU finished with nine offensive rebounds and a 9-2 edge in second-chance points
  • Regis won the turnover battle, 14-12
  • Singh led all Rangers with three assists from the forward position
UP NEXT: The Rangers conclude their west coast road trip at 2 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Sunday when they take a trip across The Bay Bridge to Oakland for a matchup against Holy Names University.
