Rangers dominate defensive glass, pick up first road win of 2022-23 against Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Regis University men's basketball team closed out a two-game west coast road trip Sunday afternoon, grinding out a 74-64 road win out in Oakland against Holy Names University.

With the win, Regis (2-2 overall) moves back to .500 in nonconference play and 1-1 on the road trip, while the loss drops Holy Names, a member of the Pac West Conference, to 1-3 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers turned in a balanced performance Sunday as they shot a sizzling 64% (16-for-25) in the first half and finished the afternoon at a season-best 56 percent (28-for-50) clip.

Holy Names, led by its tandem of Roman Behrens and CJ Smith, would nearly match the Rangers as the Hawks shot 63 percent (15-for-24) through the opening 20 minutes. The duo combined for 38 of the Hawks' 64 points and helped keep the Rangers' lead in check at 39-37 entering the break.

Following a 12-2 run, the Hawks would take their first and only lead of the second half at 51-48 with 12:22 remaining before the Rangers responded with a 16-4 blitz of their own to balloon their lead back out to nine at 64-55 at the 6:53 mark.

The Hawks never inched any closer than six points the rest of the way as the Rangers put a bow on their first road win of 2022-23.

Sophomore forward Brayden Carter led a balanced Regis offense that saw five different players finish in double-figures. Carter scored 14 points on an economic 5-of-6 shooting — 12 of those points coming in the second half — while adding eight rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench.

Senior forward Aaron Bokol and redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun each finished with 12 points apiece, while fellow guards Aidan Sevilla and CJ Reed each added 11 points.

Regis dominated bench points, 31-11, and put together its best rebounding performance of the young season Sunday as the Rangers did not allow a single offensive rebound.

According to available department records, that is the first time Regis has not allowed an opponent offensive rebound in a game since at least the 2007-08 season.

Bokol led all Rangers with 11 rebounds, 10 on the defensive end of the floor, to record his second straight double-double on the road trip. The 6'5 small forward is currently averaging a team-best 11.5 rebounds per game through the Rangers' first four contests.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis won the turnover battle, 15-10, and points off turnovers, 17-9.
  • Both teams struggled from the free-throw line Sunday as Regis finished 12-of-20 (60%) and Holy Names shot 6-of-11 (55%).
