Rangers fall to Seattle Pacific in Thanksgiving Classic opener

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team returned to the Regis Field House on Friday to open the 2022 Thanksgiving Classic against Seattle Pacific University, falling by a narrow 66-63 final.

In the last minute of the game, a decisive offensive rebound would prove to be crucial for the Falcons (2-1 overall) in the win over the Rangers (3-2 overall), who were riding a three-game winning streak entering play Friday.

"Seattle Pacific is a very good team, they beat Azusa Pacific who is always regionally ranked if not top of the region so I knew [Seattle Pacific] was going to be tough," said Regis women's basketball coach, Molly Marrin. "I thought that they had a really nice, balanced team and I knew it was going to be a challenge for us, but I thought we were pretty evenly matched in that component."

How It Happened: After trailing by six at the half, and being down by as many as eight in the fourth quarter, a jumper from junior guard Erin Fry at the 4:44 mark triggered an 11-4 run for the Rangers.

Sophomore Athena Saragoza would hit her third three of the night with 3:50 left on the clock to help shrink the Falcons' lead to three. Saragoza finished the night shooting 43 percent (3-7) from the beyond the arc.

A layup from Erin Stroberg brought the Rangers within one, and a fast break jumper from Josey Ryan capped the run at 63-62 giving Regis its first lead of the half with 2:08 left in the game.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, Seattle Pacific retook the lead with 1:51 remaining. Still trailing by one with 14 seconds remaining, Regis got a big defensive stop but the Falcons were able to pounce on the offensive rebound.

Regis was forced to foul four times over the final nine seconds, finally getting the ball back, down 66-63, with four seconds to go.

Ryan had a look to tie at the buzzer but her three-pointer just missed long, sealing the 66-63 final.

"In that final minute, we got a huge defensive stop and we had a lot of momentum going into that. Then we gave up an offensive board and not being able to close that possession really hurts," said Marrin. "I thought overall that the 11-4 run coming back showed that we got a team that never quits and can make runs, especially late. It just didn't quite end up on our end this time."

Game Notes:
  • Josey Ryan and Erin Fry led all Rangers with 14 points apiece
  • Sam Deem was third with 13 points and shooting 6-10 from the field
  • Regis led SPU 11-4 in fast break points
  • Regis' bench totaled 13 points on the night
Up Next: The Rangers conclude the Thanksgiving Classic against Central Washington University on Saturday at 3:30 P.M. at the Regis Field House.

"Central Washington were 4-0 coming in to this. They've got one of the best post players in the country and she's going to be super tough," said Marrin. "They also have a very good 3-point shooting team. They've got good balance inside and out and we're going to have to find a way to make them make tough shots and limit their post touches inside."
