No. 3 seeded Rangers fall in RMAC Tournament title game to top-seeded Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — In a rematch of the RMAC regular season title, the No. 3 seeded Regis University women's soccer team and top-seeded Colorado School of Mines squared off again Saturday in the RMAC Tournament Championship out in Golden at Stermole Soccer Stadium.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, who were making their second straight trip to the tournament title game, their upset bid of the No. 9 Orediggers fell shy as Colorado School of Mines scored two second-half goals to take the 2-0 victory.

"The same tough opponent we faced last week was here again today. That's a very good Mines team over there," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We prepared hard for them all week in practice, and we were very pleased with how we came out and started that game. We had some great chances and I'm really proud of our players for how much more confident with played with ball and for taking that challenge of playing Mines straight up."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers (12-7-2 overall) did not shy away from the nationally ranked Orediggers, generating five shots, one shot on goal and another prime scoring chance at the 34:31 mark by sophomore Sarah Wynn that rang just off the left goalpost.

Wynn led all Regis players with three total shots Saturday and was just inches away from giving Regis a 1-0 lead to work with.

"Sarah had played really well and brought a great deal of energy off the bench. On that particular play, she got behind the defense and won a foot race, which she usually does. But she was getting forced wide by the defender inside of her, making the angle of the shot was made more difficult," Frykholm said. "She struck it well and it was just two inches to the right away from giving us a 1-0 lead. That's a chance that really changes the game if it goes in."

Instead of a one-goal lead, the Rangers had to settle for a scoreless tie at the break And in the second half, the high-powered Orediggers' offense was finally able to convert on its sustained pressure.

Mines scored its first goal in the 66th minute on a cross that just got past a Regis defender to a wide open Afton Rasco in front of the net.

"Mines applied a little more pressure on us in the second half and we were unable to sustain our possession like we were in the first half. They had 5-6 good possessions in a row and we just lost a mark inside the box on that first goal," Frykholm said. "Mines kept coming and coming, and we'd been defending really well, but there was a moment where a ball found an open player with a good look and she buried it. They finished their good chance in that moment and difference in the game. Mines was able to capitalize on their good scoring chances."

The Orediggers would add an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Michelle Easley squeeze a ball between the crossbar and outstretched hand of Rangers' goalkeeper, Katelyn Martin.

Martin, who tied her career high in saves with 11 on Saturday for the second straight game, was one of four Regis players named to the RMAC All-Tournament team, joined by senior forward Kelby Kuo, junior midfielder Jillian Skurcenski, and senior forward Audrey Teague, who scored the game winner in the RMAC semi-final against UCCS.

GAME NOTES:
  • Colorado School of Mines finished the game with a 30-9 shots advantage (13-3 shots on goal)
  • Senior defenseman Ella Palmer and sophomore defenseman Madison Cullinan each had one shot on goal, tied with Wynn for the team high.
  • With her 11 saves on Saturday, Martin finishes the year with a career-high 112 saves; the most for any RMAC goalkeeper in 2022.
UP NEXT: There is still hope the Regis women's soccer team receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament when the official bracket is announced Monday.
Regardless if that call comes or not, Frykholm said he is proud of the 2022 team — preseason picked No. 7 in the RMAC Coaches' Poll — for the resiliency and building blocks they established this fall in his first season as head coach.

"All year long we've talked about not setting our sights or goals on results. We obviously wanted to win the conference and play at the national tournament. Every team in America wants that. But we've focused on creating our standards, our culture and our processes," Frykholm said. "These last six weeks have been a tremendous period of growth day to day and that's what I'm taking away from our season. We're just beginning this process together. We've shown we're capable of competing with the best in the league and that means a lot in a season where not many people, outside of our camp, believed we would be capable of doing that. Top to bottom, there was a lovely spirit and sense of unity about this team that I'll always remember. This team was resilient and they loved each other. I couldn't have asked for a better group in helping me establish this new chapter in the Regis women's soccer program."
