Egun pours in career-high 19 points, but Rangers fall 71-65 to Colorado Mesa

DENVER, Colo. — Facing an experienced a battle tested Colorado Mesa University squad, the Regis University men's basketball team fought to put itself in a position to win late on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Rangers, they fell just shy of completing an undefeated weekend as the visiting Mavericks held on for the 71-65 final.

Regis (4-6 overall, 1-3 RMAC), which beat Westminster College in buzzer-beater fashion on Friday, finishes the weekend 1-1 while the Mavericks, who started 0-2 in conference play, improved to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED: A tough first half put the Rangers behind the 8-ball as  they trailed by as many as 16 points on Saturday at 39-23 and were down 39-26 at the break.

Regis began chipping away midway through the second half, pulling even for the first time at 47-47 with 11:11 remaining. Redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun scored the equalizer with a mid-range jumper to cap what was an 11-1 run by the Rangers that started at the 14:29 mark.

The Rangers took their first lead of the second half at 53-53 on a pair of free-throws by junior guard Aidan Sevilla, and held their largest lead of the game at 60-55 with 6:23 remaining on a jumper by fellow junior guard CJ Reed.

Unfortunately for Regis, offense would be hard to come by over the final 6:23 as the Rangers were held to just two points over the next six minutes and five points the rest of the way as Colorado Mesa closed on a 16-5 run to steal away the 71-65 final.

Egun led all Rangers with a career-high 19 points Saturday in his 28 minutes off the bench, shooting an efficient 7-of-15 and adding six rebounds and three steals.

He was joined in double-figures by Reed with 14 points and sophomore forward Brayden Carter, who also chipped in 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis shot 41 percent (12-for-29) in the second half and finished at 36 percent (21-for-58) for the game.
  • Colorado Mesa finished the evening at 55 percent (27-for-49) from the field, but were held to 0-for-7 from 3-point range in the second half.
  • The Rangers dominated the offensive glass, 19-9. Egun had five offensive rebounds to lead the way, while senior forward Aaron Bokol and Carter each had four offensive rebounds.
UP NEXT: Regis will conclude its current three-game home stand next Friday when it hosts Chadron State College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Regis Field House.
