TUCSON, Ariz. - The Regis University softball team (3-3, 0-0 RMAC) headed south to warmer weather, opening play at the 11th annual Desert Stinger, hosted by MSU Billings. Regis was one of 21 teams competing in the tournament at the beautiful 12-field Lincoln Park in Tucson.
Game One | How it Happened: The Rangers faced the Chico State Wildcats (6-1) to open tournament play.
The Wildcats scored five unanswered runs through the first three innings with sophomore
Megan Loveland (2-1) in the circle for Regis. Junior
Abby Covington was called in to relieve Loveland, but even she couldn't stop the five more Wildcat runs from being scored.
The bats just were not there for RU in game one to spark any offense. The 10-0 shutout was final.
Game Notes: Regis scored no runs off three hits and had no errors.
The team left seven girls on base through the six innings played.
Sophomore
Katherine Raper led the Rangers with five putouts.
Loveland and Covington each had a pair of strikeouts.
Game Two | How it Happened: Freshman
Kylie Harpman (3-3) got the start in the circle for Regis in game two versus the San Francisco State Gators (3-4).
After SFSU racked up a trio of unanswered runs through the fifth inning, the Rangers exploded in the sixth and seventh.
Freshman
Miia Campos and Raper got RU going when their singles sent home three runs. Later in the seventh, senior
Jessi Case drilled a double to left (three RBI), giving Regis a 8-3 lead.
Raper put the cherry on top with a two RBI bomb over the fence, giving the Rangers a comfortable 10-3 lead.
Harpman took down the Gators in the bottom of the seventh, sealing the victory.
Game Notes: The Rangers scored 10 runs off nine hits and had no errors.
Raper led RU in the batter's box by going 3-4 plus three RBI. She also had a team-high nine putouts.
Case was close behind as she went 2-4 and had three RBI.
Up Next For The Rangers: Regis' tournament run will continue tomorrow when they face Northwest Nazarene and Concordia (Calif.) at 9:30 a.m and noon, respectively.
