Game Recap: Softball |

RU's Combacks Fall Short Versus Rattlers

DENVER - The Regis University softball team (5-8, 0-0 RMAC) capped their homestand weekend by hosting the St. Mary's University Rattlers (13-3) Sunday afternoon. The Rattlers, one of the best teams in the loaded Lone Star Conference, showed their teeth versus the Rangers. In the DH, RU nearly had two comebacks for the ages, but fell short in each end.

Game One | How it Happened: With Sophomore Megan Loveland in the circle (2-4), the Rangers avoided getting run ruled in the opener after falling behind 11-0 through three innings of play.

Sophomore Katherine Raper's triple in the fourth scored two runs for Regis, bringing the deficit to nine. Then in the fourth, senior Shelby Shepherd's two run shot over the fence kept the Rangers in the game, but still trailing 4-11.

Junior Shayelyn Allen's RBI double and freshman Mia Moore's two RBI double in the sixth put RU in business, down just 7-12.

The Rangers had one more chance in the seventh to tie the game, and came fairly close. Shepherd made the score 8-12 when she scored on a fielder's choice, but no more runs would reach home plate for Regis.

Game Notes: RU scored eight runs off 10 hits and had six errors.

Shepherd was a perfect 2-2 in the game and had a RBI.

Freshman Miia Campos was 2-2 while Moore had a team-high two RBI.

Sophomore Carryn Leto had a team-high seven putouts.

Senior Jessi Case led the team with two assists.

Game Two | How it Happened: Regis was put in another hole early in the DH closer. Freshman Kylie Harpman (2-3) got the nod to start in the circle for game two, but the Rattlers' bats had not cooled since game one.

St. Mary's put up five unanswered runs through three innings, but RU saved their best offense for the second half of the game.

Graduate student Allisha Martinez's double to right center scored the team's first run of the day in the third. Later in the seventh and in desperate need of offense, Campos had a RBI single and Raper, with two outs, nabbed a two RBI double to bring Regis within just one run of the Rattlers.

However, St. Mary's retired the final out when they caught Raper stealing third, ending the game at 5-4, Rattlers.

Game Notes: RU scored four runs off eight hits and had two errors.

Campos and Raper were each 2-4 at the plate and combined for three RBI.

Moore had a team-high two RBI.

Leto and Case again led in putouts and assists with seven and two, respectively.

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play next weekend when they travel to Alamosa to face the Adams State Grizzlies (). The first doubleheader is set for this Saturday, game times are set for 12/2 p.m.
