LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Regis University women's basketball team (9-12, 5-9 RMAC) lost a heartbreaker at the hands of the Colorado Christian Cougars (6-13,3-10 RMAC), Friday night at the CCU Event Center in Lakewood. Sophomore
Erin Fry led Regis with 19 points in the loss while Jordyn Brown of CCU had a game-high 22 points.
How it Happened: Regis went on a 5-0 run behind a jumper from junior
Sam Deem and a trey from graduate student
Tashika Burrell to open the game. Their lead remained at five (19-14) as the first frame ended, despite RU shooting 26 percent from the field and CCU shooting 50 percent.
The Rangers started the second period the same way they started the first, this time their run was 8-0 which made their lead 27-14 (13 points). Later on in the third period though, the Cougars came back with vengeance and tied the game up at 42-42 with under six minutes to play in the third frame.
From there, the game went down to the wire and neither team led by more than two scores. With under 10 seconds to play and after a missed free throw attempt by CCU, Regis had the ball and a chance to tie the game or win on a three. Fry raced upcourt and went for the layup and the tie, but her shot was blocked. As the clock hit zero, the Cougars edged RU, 81-79.
Game Notes: Regis was 41 percent from the field (26-63) and 30 percent from the three (7-23).
Fry (4-9 FG, 1-2 3-PT) had 19 points and seven assists to lead the Rangers.
Freshman
Athena Saragoza (4-10 FG, 3-8 3-PT) was close behind with 15.
Senior
Erin Stroberg (7-12 FG) scored 14 points.
Sophomore
Madison Diercks (4-11 FG, 2-5 3-PT) and Deem (5-8 FG) had 10 points each.
Up Next for the Rangers: There's no rest for the weary. RU will look to bounce back tomorrow when they take on MSU Denver at 3:30 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
