Rangers break from conference action, split DH with Ichabods

DENVER - The Regis University softball team (16-11, 10-2) took a break from conference play as they hosted the Washburn Ichabods (20-9, 2-2) for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader. The Ichabods raced to a 8-2 victory in the opener, but the Rangers bounced back in the closer after a flurry of runs in the first and fourth, earning the DH split.

"Today, it was nice to step out of the RMAC and face a really good team to better ourselves" said head coach Nicole Thompson

Game One | How it Happened: Washburn opened game one by putting up seven runs (two earned) on sophomore Megan RHP Loveland (4-6).

Later on in the sixth, sophomore Katherine Raper moved over from 1st base to relive Loveland for thee final two innings.

With their backs against the wall in the bottom of the sixth, Regis needed some offense and fast. Raper, who was still in the batting order, logged a RBI single to end Washburn's chance at a shutout. Then, senior Carly Beard wore a bases-loaded hit by pitch to make the score 2-7.

However, that would be it in terms of offense for the Rangers as they couldn't get anymore runs home in the seventh.

Game Notes: RU scored two runs off four hits and had two errors.

Raper led in the batter's box with a 2-3 performance. She had one of the team's two RBI.

Beard had the other, bringing her season-total to nine.

Sophomore Victoria McMains and freshman Miia Campos were each 1-3. Meanwhile, Campos smashed her career-high in assists as she racked up six in the contest.

Junior Shayelyn Allen and senior Carly Gray led the team with five putouts each.

Game Two | How it Happened: With junior Abby Covington starting in the circle for game two, the Rangers took an early lead in the first when Beard bunted home Case and Raper sent a two RBI moon shot over the left field fence.

With Regis up 3-0, Washburn scored four runs in the third and fourth, taking their first lead of the day which caused Thompson to send in sophomore Alexis Kemp (1-0) to relieve Covington.

However, still in the fourth, RU responded well when Case went yard for two RBI, swinging momentum back in the Rangers favor.

Kemp finished the game strong, snuffing any chance the Ichabods had at crawling back in the game. She allowed just hits in her final 3.2 innings of work.

"Kat (Raper), Jessi (Case) and Rachel (Williams) made some great adjustments at the plate. Victoria (McMains) was big time in our nine hole today". Thompson continued, "Abby (Covington) and Alexis (Kemp) did a great job with the hitters in game two and our defense played behind them."

Game Notes: The Rangers scored five runs off eight hits and had zero errors.

Kemp got her first win of the season.

Case led at the plate, she went 2-4 and homered once and had two RBI.

Freshman Rachel Williams and McMains were both 2-3 in the box. McMains also logged a season-high four assists.

Raper was 1-3 and had a pair of RBI.

Junior Logan Taylor posted a season-high 10 putouts.

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis will play host to the Chadron State Eagles (4-20, 3-9) this weekend. First pitch is slated for noon on Saturday.
