DENVER - The Regis University softball team (18-11, 12-2 RMAC) returned to conference action after splitting its doubleheader versus Washburn the previous Tuesday at the Regis Softball Field. Today, Regis played host to the Chadron State College Eagles (4-22, 3-11 RMAC) in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, a part of the two team's four-game series. The Rangers easily handled the Eagles in game one, forcing a run rule. In the closer, both pitchers were tossing heat, but RU came out on top again!
"Today was great to see this group put together two complete, team wins! We have really worked on putting all aspects of the game together and we did that today" said Head Coach Nicole Thompson.
Game One | How it Happened: RU wasted no time as they scored four runs in the first inning alone. Freshman
Miia Campos got things cooking with a two RBI double, scoring senior
Jessi Case. Then, graduate student
Allisha Martinez and sophomore
Katherine Raper made the score 3-0 with another RBI double and a sac fly. Finally, freshman
Mia Moore's RBI double was the cherry on top of the flurry of runs.
In the third inning, Moore got her second hit of the day when she recorded a RBI single, inflating RU's lead to 5-0. However, Chadron State busted freshman Kylie Harpman's chance of a shutout when they scored in the sixth inning. But that would be the only offense that Harpman would give up.
The Rangers piled on some more runs in the home half of the sixth, Martinez drilled a RBI single to the short stop and Raper hit another two RBI double. Freshman Rachel Williams ended the game in walk-off fashion when she hit a two RBI bomb over the eft field fence, run ruling the Eagles at 10-1.
Game Notes: RU posted 10 runs off 14 hits and had one error.
Harpman rang up five batters and only allowed one run.
Case led at the plate with a 3-4 performance.
Williams was 3-3 and had two RBI. She also had a game-high seven putouts.
Martinez was 2-4 and had two RBI.
Moore was 2-3 and also had two RBI.
Raper was 1-3 and had a game-high three RBI.
Campos led with a trio of assists.
The team's five doubles was a season high. Overall, RU had a .519 BA in game one, their second-highest of the season.
Game Two | How it Happened: Game two wasn't quite the offensive showcase that game one was, but fans of great pitching were sure to be pleased. Junior
Abby Covington (2-1) had an outstanding game in the circle for Regis in Saturday's closer - she pitched a full seven innings, rang up three Eagles, had only two hits and walked just one girl en route to the 1-0 win.
RU needed just one run to beat CSC in the closer, Williams delivered in the third inning when her groundout RBI scored Campos.
From there, the pitchers continued to duel as neither left the game. In the end, Regis emerged victorious as they improved their RMAC record to 12-2.
"This game was a perfect example of doing whatever it takes to get a win in the RMAC. We've worked on situational hitting and it was shown. Abby (Covington) was a true grinder on the mound for us. So proud of her!"
Game Notes: RU scored one run off four hits and had one error.
Martinez was 2-3 in the batter's box.
Campos was 1-3.
Freshman Jordan Simonsgaard was 1-2.
Raper had a team-high five putouts while Campos led again with three assists.
"To put up 14 hits in game one really set the the tone for the day and we had some great swings and contributions from 1-9 in our line up. Jessi (Case), Miia (Campos), Allisha (Martinez) and Mia (Moore) were tough outs. "Rachel (Williams) was on fire today at the plate and is really helping us out in the OF as well. Kylie (Harpman) again held it down on the mound while defense worked great all day!"
Up Next For The Rangers: The four-game series will continue tomorrow with game times set at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
