Game Recap: Softball |

Rangers earn DH split behind Harpman and powerful bats versus CMU

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Regis University softball team (21-14, 15-5 RMAC) finished up their four-game series with Colorado Mesa (25-6, 17-2 RMAC) Sunday afternoon. The Rangers snapped Mesa's 23-game win streak in Sunday's opener behind a low six-hit performance from freshman RHP Kylie Harpman. However, the closer didn't go Regis' way as the Mavs' forced the DH split.

"We knew this series was going to be tough and I am very proud of these girls" said Head Coach Nicole Thompson

Game One | How it Happened: Harpman (W, 11-5) started on the mound in the third game of the series.

Scoring opened in the third when freshman Miia Campos blasted a two RBI double to right center, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead. But Mesa leveled the game at 2-2 in their at-bat, sparking the eventual back-and-forth affair.

RU swung momentum back in their favor in the fourth inning when freshman Mia Moore had a groundout RBI, but again, CMU tied the game with a solo homer in the home half of the inning.

In the fifth inning, graduate student Allisha Martinez had a RBI single while Mesa hit a two RBI home run to give them their first lead of the day.

Senior Carly Beard didn't let the Mavericks lead for long though, she slammed a solo dinger over the left field line fence to tie the game up at 5-5.

Still in the sixth, freshman Mia Moore scored the game-winning run after a CMU error. Harpman retired the Mavs in order in the seventh to secure the win.

"We showed so much grit, toughness and passion - it was a great game! We kept punching and never gave up. Kylie (Harpman) was big time on the mound for us, we had great defense behind her and our offense was fun to see,"

She continued, "we did the little things right at the plate when we needed to and came up with the clutch hits. We scored in many different ways and had several people step up big."

Game Notes: The Rangers scored six runs off eight hits and had zero errors.

RU took the lead four separate times throughout the game.

Senior Jessi Case went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Sophomore Victoria McMains was a perfect 2-2.

Campos drove in two runs and was 1-4.

Williams also had two RBI, she was 1-2.

Sophomore Katherine Raper led the team with six putouts.

Harpman allowed just six hits in the game and had five earned runs. She led the team with a trio of assists and struck out two batters to earn the win.

Game Two | How it Happened: The series closer saw junior RHP Abby Covington (L, 3-3) get the start in the circle.

Regis fell behind early in game two. After Mesa scored five runs through the first 3.2 innings, Raper came in the game to pitch for Covington.

Raper kept the Mavericks at bay, but RU's offense couldn't get much going. Martinez scored on a wild pitch to wipe the shutout, but no other runs would cross home plate for the Rangers.

A few more runs were scored by the home team in the sixth, ending the game early at 9-1.

Game Notes: Regis scored one run off four hits and had no errors.

Case and Campos were 1-3 at the plate. Case had a team-high two assists.

Senior Carly Gray and Moore were 1-2. Gray led the team in putouts with four.

"We are going to use this and take this into next week's series against CCU"

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis will host Colorado Christian (28-5, 8-11 RMAC) next weekend. Games will begin at noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
