DENVER - The Regis University softball team (21-16, 15-7 RMAC) returned from their road trip to Grand Junction the previous weekend to host conference leaders Colorado Christian (31-5, 19-1 RMAC) for a weekend four-game series. RU struggled to spark consistent offense through the two games in front of strong Cougar arms, losing both ends of the opening doubleheader.
Game One | How it Happened: Freshman RHP Harpman (L, 11-6) started on the mound in the series opener for the Rangers.
CCU took off quickly, they scored two runs in the first inning off a single. Harpman shook off the early cougar offense and didn't allow a run until the fourth inning. However, a Cougar two RBI homer plus a RBI double in the fourth increased the gap.
Down 5-0, Regis didn't go down without a fight. Still in the fourth, graduate student Allisha Martinez knocked a RBI double to right center, eliminating CCU's chance at a shutout.
That would be it in terms of scoring for either team. RU fell in the opener, 1-5.
Game Notes: Regis scored one run off five hits and had zero errors.
Sophomore Katherine Raper was responsible for two of the team's five hits, she was two-for-three at the plate. She also had a team-high nine putouts.
Senior Jessi Case was 1-3 while freshman Miia Campos was 1-2. Case logged a game-high five assists.
Martinez was 1-3 and had the sole RBI in the game.
Harpman fanned a pair of Cougars in her seven innings pitched.
Game Two | How it Happened: The DH closer saw junior RHP
Abby Covington (L, 3-4) got the nod to start game two in the circle for RU.
Once again, CCU struck first in the ballgame. The Cougars scored a pair off a home run to center to go up 2-0 on Regis.
Later in the third, CCU increased its lead to 4-0 after a double and a single.
After another run scored from Colorado Christian in the fifth, RU finally sparked a small rally in the sixth.
Back-to-back triples from Case and Campos plus Martinez's groundout RBI were the highlights of the game for RU. But in the end, Regis fell, 2-5.
Game Notes: The Rangers scored two runs off six hits and had one error.
Case led at the plate, she went 2-3 and had a team-high two assists.
Campos and Martinez were each 1-3 and logged a RBI.
Sophomore Carryn Leto had a team-high seven putouts.
Up Next For The Rangers: Regis will look to turn things around and earn a series split tomorrow. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at the Regis Softball Field.
