DENVER - The Regis University softball team (30-20, 24-11 RMAC) swept the final doubleheader in their series versus MSU Denver (31-20, 19-15 RMAC) Sunday afternoon at the Regis Softball Field. RU took the opener 7-2 behind fantastic pitching and equally as impressive bats. The series closer was just as exciting as junior RHP
Abby Covington dueled her way to her fifth win of the year as Regis won the four-game series.
Game One | How it Happened: Freshman RHP
Kylie Harpman (W, 18-7) started in the circle in game one for the Rangers.
The Rangers struck first in the home half of the first inning: freshman Miia Campos knocked a RBI single to left center, scoring senior Jessi Case. Campos scored later in the inning after a Roadrunner error while senior Carly Beard made the lead 3-0 with a RBI double.
Scoring cooled until the fourth inning when Beard rocketed a homer to left, making the team's advantage 4-0. Sophomore Katherine Raper followed in the fifth with another solo bomb to put Regis up 5-0.
With Harpman dealing in the circle, the offense continued to deal damage and put themselves far out of reach of MSU Denver.
Case drilled a RBI triple to right center in the sixth, making the score 7-0 with just one more inning to go.
The Roadrunners finally got aboard in the seventh, erasing Harpman's shutout and no hitter, but that did not take away from her incredible performance.
Game Notes: Regis scored seven runs off 10 hits and had a pair of errors.
Harpman fanned 10 batters and allowed just four hits in the game. She was hitless through five innings.
Raper and Beard led at the dish with two-for-three performances and two RBI each.
Campos was 2-4 and had a RBI.
Case was 1-3 and also had a RBI.
Freshman Rachel Williams led the team in putouts with 10.
Game Two | How it Happened: The series closer saw Covington (W, 5-6) start in the circle.
The Roadrunners commenced scoring in the series closer with a RBI single, but Regis matched quickly in the second inning when senior Carly Gray logged a RBI single.
The squad inflated their lead to 3-0 in the third inning after graduate student Allisha Martinez's RBI single and Raper's RBI double.
That would be it in terms of scoring though as both side's bats cooled. However, Covington kept the heat and did a wonderful job of getting Regis out of the game.
Game Notes: Regis scored three runs off five hits and had two errors.
Martinez led in the batter's box with a 2-3 performance and one RBI.
Williams was 1-3 and also had a RBI.
Campos had a team-high two assists.
Up Next For The Rangers: The Rangers will conclude their regular season campaign next weekend when the travel to Durango. They'll face the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (18-26, 18-17 RMAC) for one more four-game series. The first doubleheader will start at noon on Saturday.
