DENVER - The Regis University softball team (34-21, 28-12 RMAC) finished off the regular season with a series win over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (20-29, 20-20 RMAC) Saturday afternoon at the Regis Softball Field. The team took both ends of the final doubleheader with an impressive offensive showcase in the opener, while the pitching staff dealt serious damage in the closer.
Game One | How it Happened: Game three saw RHP
Abby Covington (W, 6-7) start in the circle for Regis.
RU wasted no time in the first inning by scoring four runs - freshman Miia Campos' RBI single was the first run of the ball game, then graduate student Allisha Martinez's two RBI home run put the Rangers up 3-0. Freshman Rachel Williams capped the productive first inning by reaching home on a FLC error, inflating the team's lead to 4-0.
FLC added two runs in the home half of the first, but Regis kept the runs cooking in the second with five more runs. Martinez knocked a two RBI double down the left field line and sophomore Katherine Raper had a RBI single to make the score 8-2. Then, senior Shelby Shepherd's RBI single up the middle put RU up by seven runs.
The Skyhawks had a productive third, fourth and fifth inning - they came within two at 9-7 after the home half of the fifth, but RU did not flinch.
The Rangers piled it on in the seventh to put the Skyhawks away soundly. Campos scored on an error, senior Carly Beard had a sac fly and senior Carly Gray had a RBI single to right center to make their advantage 12-7.
Sophomore Megan Loveland retired the final three outs in four at-bats to seal the win.
Game Notes: RU scored 12 runs off 16 hits and had one error.
Eight Rangers recorded a hit in game three.
Campos led at the dish with a three-for-four performance and had two RBI.
Williams was 5-3 one RBI.
Martinez racked up four RBI and was 2-5.
Raper, Gray and Shepherd all had one RBI.
Game Two | How it Happened: The series finale saw Raper (W, 3-1) start in the circle.
The series closer wasn't the offensive showcase that game three was, but fans of pitchers duels were sure to be entertained.
However, with Beard and Campos on base in the first inning, Williams dug in and delivered a massive home run to set the tone for game four.
FLC made a small attempt on Raper in the third by mustering one run, but that was all she would allow.
Raper dealt four strikeouts and just four hits through the rest of the game, snuffing any chance the Skyhawks had at a comeback.
In the end, RU held on to their 3-1 advantage and the series win.
Game Notes: RU scored three runs off five hits and had one error.
Williams led in the batter's box, she was two-for-three on the day and had three RBI.
Junior Shayelyn Allen was 1-3 and led with a game-high eight putouts.
