Rangers split Friday double-header at Western Washington Invitational

BELLINGHAM, Washington — The Regis University volleyball team opened its 2022 season out on the West Coast on Thursday, earning a split of its first two matches at the Western Washington Invitational.

Regis (1-1 overall), which received votes in the preseason AVCA Top-25 National Poll, began the day with a 3-1 victory against another team that received national votes in California State University-Los Angeles (1-1 overall) before concluding Thursday evening with a tightly contested 3-1 loss to tournament hosts, No. 5 ranked Western Washington (3-0 overall).

"Overall, it was a good day for us. We got a nice win against a good team in Cal State LA and then played a very veteran team in Western Washington that was in the Final Four last year," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "I thought we played really well against them considering they are already firing on all cylinders and we're still forming our lineups. Matches like these are really important and why we scheduled them; to figure out what type of team we are. And the thing I'm proud of most is how our team handled ourselves."

Match One: (RV) California State-Los Angeles
The Rangers opened the 2022 season with a four-set victory over California State University-Los Angeles, propelled by a strong defensive effort that saw Regis limit the Golden Eagles (1-1 overall) to a .107 hitting percentage.

Regis popped up 52 digs in the victory, led by senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy with a match-high 22, while forcing 22 hitting errors and winning the block battle, 7-5.

The Rangers' stellar defensive effort laid the foundation for a strong offensive performance, as well, with three Regis players finishing with double-digit kill totals. Sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis led the charge with a team-high 15 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, while fellow senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink and junior outside hitter Halle Theis each added 10 kills.

Graduate student Klaudia Sowizral, making her Regis debut after transferring from UConn, tallied eight kills and three block assists. And the glue of the Rangers' offense, senior setter Mara LeGrand, impressed with 38 assists and six kills on a .559 hitting percentage.

"It's hard for other teams to defend because they can't stack up blocks on any particular player," List said regarding the team's offensive depth. "It's a huge asset to have that many quality hitters. But it all starts with our back row defense, and a great distributor in Mara at the setter position."

Match Two: No. 5 Western Washington
Friday's nightcap pinned the Rangers against the No. 3 team in the country and a NCAA Final Four representative from a season ago in Western Washington.

After the Vikings took the first set, 25-16, Regis responded back with a 25-18 win in Set Two to even the match at 1-1. The Rangers held WWU to a pedestrian .054 hitting percentage in the set while holding a 4-1 edge in service aces.

Regis carried that momentum into the third set, holding a 21-18 lead following a kill by Burbrink, before the Vikings reclaimed control of the match with a 6-1 run to take a 24-22 lead en route to a 27-25 win.

"Right there at 21-18 we had a one-on-one we needed to put away, but were unable to. Those are some plays we can pinpoint and learn from, but that's what a good team does against you. We're a young team and we now learn from it," List said. "That was for sure the turning point in the match."

Western Washington would go on to win the fourth set, 25-21, to secure the 3-1 victory.

Davis led all Rangers with 13 kills on a .321 hitting percentage, while Theis joined her in double-figures with 11 kills. Burbrink and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Kepler followed with nine kills and eight kills, respectively.

LeGrand capped her strong season debut with a double-double, posting 35 assists and 13 digs to go with six kills.

Defensively, Kennedy led four Regis players with double-digit dig totals with 19. Junior defensive specialist Bre Skala and Theis each recorded 11 digs to help pace the Rangers.

Up Next: Regis will conclude the Western Washington Invitational with a pair of Saturday matches, beginning at 1 p.m. (Mountain Time) against Sonoma State University. The Rangers then conclude the tournament with a 6 p.m. matchup against Simon Fraser University, another team that garnered votes in the AVCA National Top-25 poll.
