Passing plagues Rangers on final day of Western Washington Invitational

BELLINGHAM, Washington — The Regis University volleyball team concluded its two-day trip to the Western Washington Invitational on Saturday, falling in a pair of four-set matches against Sonoma State and Simon Fraser University, respectively.

Regis (1-3 overall), still in the early stages of integrating seven new players on the roster in 2022, experienced some of the growing pains Saturday that go with a new team learning to play together.

"It was two rough losses for us and I think our team is still in the process of learning how to win," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We put a lot of pressure on our outsides (Saturday) because we didn't pass very well. We have some things we know we'll need to work on next week."

Match One: Sonoma State University
After storming out to a 25-17 win in Set One, the Rangers hit a snag in their first match on Saturday as they fell 25-16, 25-16 and 25-15 over the final three sets to Sonoma State.

Regis was limited to 32 kills on a .097 hitting percentage while the Seawolves tallied 52 kills hitting .229 and winning the digs battle, 63-43.

"We had a little size on Sonoma and their strategy was kind of sub us off the court. After that first set, Sonoma really zeroed in on their serves, picked on some of our passers, and we then weren't able to run the offense we wanted to," List said. "But the match definitely came down to passing and some difficulties with serve receive and that bled into our second match of the day, as well."

Sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis led all Rangers with 10 kills while senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink added eight kills. Davis is currently averaging a team-best 12.25 kills per match on a blistering .415 hitting percentage through the team's first four matches.

Defensively, two players finished with double-digit kill totals for the Rangers in senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy (12) and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Kepler (10).

Match Two: (RV) Simon Fraser
In Saturday's nightcap, some inconsistency with passing would again plague the Rangers as they fell 23-25, 25-23, 26-24 and 25-16 to a Simon Fraser squad that also received votes in the AVCA Preseason Top-15 poll.

Regis played its two best sets of the Night in Set Two and Set Three, posting a .258 hitting percentage in the 25-23 win in Set Two and hitting .351 in a narrow 26-24 defeat in Set Three.

Simon Fraser rode the momentum of taking a 2-1 match lead, securing its 3-1 victory with a 25-16 win in Set Four.

The Rangers finished with a 58-55 advantage in total digs, while narrowly losing the kills (53-50), blocks (11-9) and aces (5-2) battles.

Junior outside hitter Halle Theis led all players with 15 kills; one of her career high of 16, which she has accomplished twice on November 12, 2021 against Colorado Mesa and on March 6, 2021 at Western Colorado.

Davis was the second Ranger in double-figures with 11 kills while Kepler chipped in nine kills.

Senior setter Mara LeGrand and fellow senior Haley Kennedy paced the back row defense with 19 digs apiece.

Up Next: Regis heads back home to co-host the annual Colorado Premier Challenge alongside Metropolitan State University of Denver. Ten of the 12 teams making their way to Denver next week are ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top-25 poll.

The Rangers will get the tournament started with pool play at 2:30 p.m. Friday with a clash against West Texas A&M University. They then cap the first day with a 6 p.m. match against the University of Central Missouri inside the Regis Field House.
