Rangers knock off No. 11 Central Missouri, go 1-1 on Day One of the Colorado Premier Challenge

DENVER, Colo. — Playing on its home floor for the first time in 2022, and lining up against some of the best talent in the country, the Regis University volleyball team opened the first day of the Colorado Premier Challenge with a split against a pair of nationally ranked foes.

After beginning the afternoon with a four-set loss to No. 12 West Texas A&M, the Rangers (2-4 overall) knocked off No. 11 Central Missouri (2-3 overall) in four sets (23-25, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-21) to punch their ticket to Saturday's Silver Bracket.

"West Texas was a good match against a tough regional opponent. We just didn't have quite enough to beat them, but I was very proud of our team's resilience to come back against Central Missouri," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "They could have held their heads from the earlier loss, but they fought back and played a great match against UCM."

Match Two: Regis vs. #11 Central Missouri
Regis dropped a tightly contested first set, 25-23, before roaring back with an emphatic 25-14 win in Set Two, evening the match at 1-1. Regis powered down 13 kills versus just four errors while, defensively, limiting UCM to a .000 hitting percentage (8 Kills, 8 Attack Errors).

The Rangers rode that momentum over the final two sets, winning 25-22 and 25-21, capped off by a monster block from the duo of senior setter Mara LeGrand and sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis; one of a season-high 16 blocks for Regis on the night.

Davis finished with one solo block, seven block assists and a team-high 14 kills in the win as she and senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink (seven kills) helped open up the Rangers' offense.

"We wanted to establish our middles and we were able to do that, so that opened up us being able to set our pins later in the match in Set Three and Set Four," List said. "Our efficiency numbers went way up and our serve did a great job getting UCM out of its system. It was our serve and ability to run middle that really helped us."

Junior outside hitter Halle Theis and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Kepler joined Davis in double-figures with 12 kills and 10 kills, respectively.

LeGrand was all over the hardwood, finishing with 32 assists, a team-high three service aces and 14 digs from the setter position.

Theis led all Regis players with 16 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Bre Skala (10 digs) and senior libero Haley Kennedy (14 digs) were also in double-figures. For Kennedy, her 32 digs on Friday were historic as she became just the 26th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career digs.

"She's very deserving of the accomplishment. She came in as a freshman, was back and forth as libero, then became a RMAC Defensive Player of the Year and established herself," List said of Kennedy. "This year, she has also taken on a bigger leadership role and I couldn't be more proud of her. She's all over the court, taking a lot of balls in serve receive, and she had a massive dig in that fourth set that helped our team rally. We need big plays like that from her to help motivate our team in big matches."

Match One: Regis vs. #12 West Texas A&M
In the first match of the day Friday, the Rangers were able to earn a 25-20 win in Set One over the Lady Buffs (5-1 overall), but were unable to hold on as West Texas responded with wins of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-20 to complete the comeback.

West Texas finished the match with 55 kills on a .268 hitting percentage versus 50 kills on .169 for the Rangers.

Theis led all Regis players with 12 kills while Burbrink (11 kills) and Davis (10 kills) joined her in double-figures.

Kennedy paced the Rangers' back row with 18 digs and LeGrand completed another double-double with 15 digs and 38 assists.

UP NEXT: Competing in the Silver Bracket, the Rangers will open up Day Two action of the Colorado Premier Challenge with a 9 a.m. clash against No. 5 ranked West Florida (5-1 overall).

"The beauty of this tournament is you have the same mantra going into every match. Every single team is very good and you have to play your 'A Game,' be highly efficient with low errors, because none of these teams are going to give you points," List said. "You have to earn every point to win a match. West Florida had a tremendous season last year. Coach Wolter does a great job with them so we know they'll be well prepared for us."
