Davis has historic night, Rangers win a pair of top-10 matchups to conclude the Colorado Premier Challenge

DENVER, Colo. — A young, restructured Regis University volleyball team made huge strides on Saturday during Day Two of the Colorado Premier Challenge, earning a pair of impressive victories with their sweep of No. 5 ranked University of West Florida and reverse sweep of No. 10 Northwest Missouri State University.

The Rangers (4-4 overall) finished another loaded Colorado Premier Challenge with a 3-1 overall record and as the Silver Bracket championships; all three wins coming against ranked opponents.

"There was a lot of growth from our team (Saturday). And especially in that last match (against NMSU), we had contributions from everyone," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We made a lot of adjustments and responded well to those changes, which showed a lot of maturity."

Match One: Regis vs. #5 West Florida (25-15, 25-19 and 25-14)
The Rangers began the day with a early morning sweep of West Florida, racking up 50 kills versus just 12 attack errors for a blistering .437 hitting percentage for the match.

"On the second day of Premier, especially the 9 a.m. match, is so tough on everybody. We've been doing it long enough that we told our team, 'We're either going to be the team that hasn't gotten out of bed yet, or the team that is serious and ready to go.' And that's how we played" List said. "That's a very good West Florida team and they showed that throughout the tournament. But our serve and pass for sure was what helped us in that match. We were able to keep West Florida out of its system."

Junior outside hitter Halle Theis led all players with 13 kills, followed close behind by senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink (10 kills) and sophomore Amelia Davis (nine kills). As a team, the Rangers had six players with six or more kills — six apiece from Klaudia Sowizral, Hannah Kepler and setter Mara LeGrand — all of whom hit .333 or better, led by Burbrink's .667.

LeGrand added 35 assists and a team-high two service aces and fellow senior Haley Kennedy paced the back row with seven digs.

Match Two: Regis vs. #10 Northwest Missouri State
A historic performance from Davis fueled a thrilling come-from-behind, five-set victory against the Bearcats (6-2 overall) as the 6'5 middle blocker powered down a career-high 28 kills; the third most single-match kills for a Ranger in program history.

Davis' dominance was also incredibly efficient as her 28 kills — 23 coming over the final four sets — came on 56 swings and just seven attack errors for a .375 hitting percentage.

"I'd say Amelia's performance is top-5 of what I've seen during my time here," List said. "It's exciting because she is so young still and is going to be so much better as she develops, not just offensively because her block is so strong. It's a great accomplishment for her and we're excited to see what's to come."

The Rangers fell behind 2-0 with losses of 25-21 and 25-15, but stormed back to take the final three sets with wins of 25-12, 25-16 and 15-11. They hit 64% (19 kills, one error) in Set Three and 63% (17 kills, no errors) in Set Four alone.

Burbrink gave Regis a dynamic one-two punch from the middle as she tallied her own career high of 20 kills on a sizzling .655 hitting percentage.

"I think the turnaround started with our serve receive. We calmed down and put the ball where Mara could deliver a more accurate set and that just got us going," List said. "Amelia and Nadine were hitting so high that they're tough to block and because (the Bearcats) couldn't stop it, we kept milking it."

LeGrand finished the evening with a season-high 53 assists — just three of her career high of 56 — and completed her double-double with 13 digs.

Kennedy led all Rangers with 28 digs and a team-high four service aces.

Up Next: The Rangers end the non-conference portion of their schedule on a crescendo and now get to take a breather, collect themselves and head into RMAC conference play beginning Wednesday with a 5 p.m. home match against Colorado School of Mines.

"We'll now be able to focus in on conference. We won't have to worry about tournament travel — tournament losses can stress you out because you're trying to quickly fix things — and then hosting Premier; we're not going to know what to do with ourselves," List joked. "That being said, we're going to have some time to debrief from all the good and bad of this last weekend and look at what we have in store for the conference."
