#23 Rangers open RMAC play with sweep of #15 Colorado School of Mines

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 23 ranked Regis University volleyball team opened conference play on Wednesday evening with a statement, rolling to a three-set victory over No. 15 Colorado School of Mines inside the Regis Fieldhouse.

Regis (5-4 overall, 1-0 RMAC) was able to limit the visiting Orediggers to a .128 hitting percentage while the Rangers' offense hit at a .245 clip in the 25-22, 25-20 and 25-22 sweep.

"It feels great to open RMAC play with a win. It was kind of a tough draw to get Mines as our first conference opponent, because those matches go back and forth each time we play them," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We're happy with what our team did tonight and we know that Mines, which is a young team with some new pieces, will be a dangerous team to face again at the end of the year."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers came out swinging in the first set, powering down 12 kills versus just three errors on 22 attempts (.409) to edge out the Orediggers for a 25-22 set win.

Junior outside hitter Halle Theis tallied four of her 10 kills in the first set, and hit at a .412 clip for the evening, on what was a strong night for the Regis starting outside hitters.

Sophomore hitter Hannah Kepler produced six kills and a .385 attack percentage to balance out a Rangers' attack that had 57 kills from their middle blockers in a five-set win against Northwest Missouri State last Saturday.

"If I were Mines, I probably would have scouted our middle blockers too after last weekend," List said. "So it was great to see our outside hitters have a strong night and for us to show we're not a team that only relies on our middles."

The Rangers' middles would still play a major factor in Wednesday's win, though, as senior Nadine Burbrink led all players with 13 kills and added three block assists. Sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis, the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, tallied four kills and a team-high four block assists.

Senior setter Mara LaGrand notched her sixth double-double of the season with 27 assists and 10 digs while the Rangers, as a team, finished with just two receiving errors and four service aces on the night to help tip the scale in their favor.

"We've come a long way already from that first weekend in Washington. We've changed the lineup a little bit. Putting Kylie Stremmel in there has helped calm some things in the passing lanes and she did a great job tonight," List said. "Braiziah Dixon, who has come in and kind of been a serving specialist for us, had two aces and was great tonight so kudos to those two freshmen."

Defensively, senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy paced the back row with 15 dig, while LeGrand followed with 10 and the duo of Theis and sophomore defensive specialist Bre Skala each had six digs apiece.

UP NEXT: Regis gets ready for a three-match road swing inside the RMAC, starting with a trip south down I-25 to face the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. The match is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. inside the Gallogly Events Center.

"We got to watch UCCS a little bit in their match the other night. They have a new head coach, some new players, so it'll be a little different scouting report than usual," List said. "I think they have some really talented pieces that are getting better and better, so we'll have our work cut out for us playing on the road for the first RMAC match."
