Theis career-high 26 kills pace Rangers in 3-1 road win over UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Led by a career performance from junior outside hitter Halle Theis, the No. 23 ranked Regis University volleyball team rolled to a four-set road win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday inside the Gallogly Events Center.

Theis obliterated her previous career highs in kills (16) and hitting percentage (.438) on Saturday as she led all players with 26 kills on a sizzling .524 attack percentage. The Nebraska native capped her special performance with 10 digs for her third double-double thus far in 2022.

"I think Halle has come a long way even in just the last couple of weeks, in how she's attacking balls. Mara (LeGrand) has helped with that too, finding a rhythm in what she needs to be successful. I think that's always a hard part for a setter; finding out what each hitter needs," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "The matchups we had Saturday gave Halle an edge and it was a perfect storm for her big night. We just kept feeding her."

Regis improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 inside the RMAC with the win, extending the team's winning streak to five, while UCCS fell to .500 at 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers overcame a 21-17 deficit in Set One, ending the set on a 9-3 blitz to steal Set One, 26-24.

Regis fed off the momentum as it cruised to a 25-11 win in Set Two, with Theis tallying eight of her 26 kills in the set, to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

UCCS bounced back to edge the Rangers, 25-23, in the third set, but Regis countered with a 25-16 win in Set Four that saw the team post its highest hitting percentage of the match (.357) and limit UCCS to a .095 hitting percentage to close out the victory.

Sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis joined Theis in double-figures with 10 kills, while graduate student middle blocker Klaudia Sowizral and sophomore outsider hitter Hannah Kepler added nine kills and seven kills, respectively.

Senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink finished with six kills and senior setter Mara LeGrand added five kills to go with her 49 assists and six total blocks to help pace the Rangers' offense.

"I think UCCS may have focused most of its defensive attention on Amelia and Nadine, but in order for us to do great things we need to have others step," List said. "And in these last few weeks, we've had someone different step up each night and it's been great to see that everyone will play an important role in our success."

Across the back row, senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy popped up a team-high 16 digs and led all players with four service aces.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis finished with a 63-40 advantage in total kills
  • Regis held an 8-4 advantage in service aces
  • Defensively, Regis won the block battle, 11-8, and finished with 48 digs to 43 digs by the Mountain Lions.
  • Regis hit .292 for the match as a team with 63 kills and 23 attack errors.
  • UCCS hit .156 for the match with 40 kills and 20 attack errors.
UP NEXT: The Rangers continue their three-match road trip next weekend when they take on Fort Lewis College (6 p.m. Friday) and Western Colorado (5 p.m. Saturday).

"Classes are now in full swing so we need to make sure, as a coaching staff, that the team is rejuvenated mentally and physically," List said. "I think that will be an important piece to us playing well and handling the long road trip this weekend."
