Rangers extend win streak to six with a five-set road win over Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. — The No. 20 ranked Regis University volleyball team began its southwest road trip off with a gritty five-set victory on Friday, knocking off Fort Lewis College to extend the team's current winning streak to six.

Friday's victory for Regis (7-4 overall, 3-0 RMAC) was not always the prettiest as the Rangers and Skyhawks (4-6 overall, 2-2 RMAC) combined for 69 hitting errors. But Regis was able to put together runs when it mattered the most to grind out the 23-25, 25-18, 25-8, 23-25 and 15-9 final.

"There wasn't much clean about the match, except that third set where we played very efficient, but it was a night where it was more about, 'Who is going to make less errors?'" said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "But what we talked to the team about was, when you start making errors it can be easy to dwell on those. So we constantly just kept the focus on the next play. And when you're playing against a team that was also going through it, you have to focus on doing the small things right. We adjusted for that and I gave kudos to the team because we played well in the times we needed to."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers had the evening get off to a rough start as Fort Lewis took the opening set, 25-23. Regis would rebound with wins of 25-18 and a dominant 25-8 win in Set Three, where the team posted 10 kills and just three errors for a .350 hitting percentage.

Senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink had three of her 13 kills in the third set and was one of four Rangers to finish in double figures, led by junior outside hitter Halle Theis with 15 kills.

Middle blocker Amelia Davis added 11 kills and senior setter Mara LeGrand tallied 10 kills to go with her 45 assists and 14 digs; completing her first triple-double of the 2022 season.

Fort Lewis fought back to win the fourth set, 25-23, and held an 8-7 lead midway through the decisive fifth set, before the Rangers closed the evening on an 8-1 run to secure the 3-2 victory.

And while Friday was a difficult night for the offense (.180 hitting percentage), the Rangers' effort on defense proved to be a major deciding factor as Regis won the blocking battle, 16-8, and finished with 21 more digs than Fort Lewis (82-61).

Burbrink led all Rangers with two solo blocks and six block assists, while Klaudia Sowizral added a solo block and eight block assists to pace the front row.

Behind the block, the Rangers had five players finish with double-digit dig totals, led by senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy with 22 digs.

Sophomore defensive specialist Bre Skala added a season-high 16 digs, while LeGrand (14 digs) and Theis (10 digs) rounded out the Rangers in double-figures.

"Our back row was doing a great job of keeping the ball in play and that's why we were able to get their (Skyhawks) hitting percentage down (.029) was because we kept the ball in play and gave us opportunities," List said. "Fort Lewis did take advantage of our bigger block at certain points, but we did a good job of sealing the net and we talked a lot about that this week. It was good to see that adjustment we made during the week come into fruition in the match tonight."

UP NEXT: Regis will be back in action at 5 p.m. Saturday when it completes the weekend road trip with a matchup against Western Colorado University out in Gunnison.

"Western Colorado played well against Fort Lewis earlier this week and they are always a feisty team," List said. "They have a new head coach, some new pieces there so there won't be a lot of predetermined scouting reports for us. That's going to be a match where we adjust on the fly, which is good for us. Good teams can do that so we'll get to find out how good our team is at doing that."
