Rangers take early lead, but fall to Western Washington 3-2

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Sunday, taking an early 2-0 lead, but falling by a 3-2 final against Western Washington University.
With the loss, Regis falls to 2-4 overall while the visiting Vikings improved to 3-0-2.

"I felt like we did really well in the first 60 minutes, controlling large portions of the game and getting a lot of clear-cut chances in the first and obviously did well to go up 2-0," said Regis men's head soccer coach Taylor Diem. "Ultimately, that first goal really hurts us and after that we just really weren't able to deal with the pressure they threw at us in the last 25 minutes."

How It Happened: Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit continued his recent hot streak, scoring two goals for the Rangers during Sunday's match; his third score of the weekend.

Carlson-Du Toit's first goal came off a loose ball placed in the 18-yard box by Elias Taubo during the 6th minute that the Vikings could not clear. Carlson-Du Toit struck gold, netting his first of the game in the lower left corner.

The sophomore's second goal came from a series of textbook passes from Taubo and Lucas Durval, setting Carlson-Du Toit up with a ball all alone along the right side of the box. Carlson-Du Toit took care of business and fired the ball into the lower right corner.

"It's good for Ray to find his stride a little bit, scoring three goals in two games is always commendable," said Diem. "He's done really well in front of the goal with the chances he's gotten over the last two games and we hope that he continues firing for us."

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the momentum shifted in the second half as the Vikings found their footing. Western Washington cut the lead in half in the 56th minute on a goal from Kaydin Wall.
The Vikings continued their second-half surge with two quick strikes in the 83rd and 85th minute to take a 3-2 lead and finish their comeback.

Game Notes:
  • Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit scored two goals, bringing his total to three on the weekend
  • Regis finished with 16 shots, 7 of which were on goal
  • Western Washington finished with 20 shots, 13 of which came in the second half
  • Luca Falagrady had five saves on the day

Up Next: The Rangers will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they play host to cross-town rival Metropolitan State University-Denver. Kickoff is scheduled for scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Regis Turf Fields.

"I'm expecting it to be a very, very competitive game between the two teams. It's Metro vs. Regis, two school that are less than ten minutes apart, so there's always that little bit of extra emotional charge put into the game," said Diem.
