Rangers win shots battle but drop Wednesday match to MSU-Denver

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team hosted cross-town rival Metropolitan State University-Denver on a cold Wednesday evening at the Regis Turf Fields, falling by a 3-0 final to the Roadrunners.

With the loss, the Rangers moved to 2-5 overall on the season, while the Roadrunners improved to 5-1-1 overall.

"Regardless of the score line, I'm proud of the boys. I thought we played really well and played some of our best football all year," Men's soccer head coach Taylor Diem said. "But even with three chances to score, the ball just didn't hit the back of the net."

How It Happened: Despite the Rangers holding an 8-4 shot advantage in the first half, the Roadrunners were able to capitalize on their few opportunities as they netted the first goal within the first five minutes from Aaron Biggerstaff. Kazuki Peralta put their second goal away in the 12th minute to take a 2-0 lead at the half.

Regis had its opportunities on Wednesday, finishing the game with 16 shots and six shots on goal, but were unable to put the final piece together to find the back of the net.

MSU Denver weathered the Regis attack and would go on to score its third goal of the night in the 50th minute on a deflection by Aidan Bates.

"Today felt like we put together a 90 minute performance. The game is like that and sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way," Diem said. "Again, proud of the boys, even down 2-0, even down 3-0 we kept playing and kept moving the ball well and creating chances and the ball just didn't bounce the right way for us tonight."

Game Notes:
Up Next: The Rangers host the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks on Friday, Sept. 16 at 3:00 PM.

"Fort Lewis is always a good team, they're going to work hard and they're going to be organized. If we have a performance like we did tonight, and move forward every single game, we're confident that it doesn't matter who the opponent is we're going to put ourselves in good positions to get results," said Diem.
