Rangers finish preseason play with 2-1 comeback win

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Rangers mounted a huge comeback win against the Fort Lewis College on a gorgeous Friday afternoon, erasing an early 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 victory at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.

Regis (3-5-0 overall) went down 1-0 just 91 seconds into the first half, but scored two goals late in the second half against the Skyhawks (1-3-2 overall) to finish the comeback.

"Credit to the guys, they showed a lot of resilience, drive, and determination to continue playing even when we went down 1-0. It's something we've talked about before, needing to be able to put together complete performances," said Regis men's head soccer coach Taylor Diem. "They continued to play for the whole 90 minutes and getting after it and ultimately getting the winner in the end. Really, really happy with the kind of grit they've shown to play for the duration of the 90 minutes."

How It Happened: Despite falling behind in the first half, the Rangers showed immense resiliency over the final 45 minutes to score two and win the match.

The Rangers' first goal came off a beautifully set up ball from Michael Jimenez to the team's current leading goal-scorer, Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit. The 66th-minute goal is Carlson-Du Toit's fifth of the season over eight matches, putting him at a 62.5 percent scoring percentage so far this fall.

After a red card for the Skyhawks put them down a man, the Rangers capitalized as Kevin Cela fired a rocket off a corner kick towards the back post where Kristian Hooker leapt over the defender to head the game-winner into the top left corner in the 85th minute.

"It's funny, we said to Kris before he went in to, 'Go and score the winner.' It was a well-executed set piece that we played short to suck the defense out of the box a little bit," Diem said. "We played to the back post where Kris physically out-manned the defender and he got on the end of it. It was a great finish and a great ball by Kevin."

The attacking six for the Rangers never let up during the match, finishing with season highs in total shots (24) and shots on goal (14).

"Today, I felt like we were a little more dangerous in terms of our positionings, and the balls and decisions we made in the final third obviously helped," said Diem. "We're trying to tell our attacking players to look to get into more dangerous positions in the box. We have a lot of talent in our attacking players and a lot of guys who can score goals. We're just encouraging our attacking players to go at the defenders and take shots when they have them."

A stat not to be overlooked, the Rangers had their third game of the season with nine corner kicks.

Game Notes
  • Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit leads the Rangers with five goals on the season
  • Skyhawks' goalkeeper Evan Kowalski finished the match with 12 saves
  • Kristian Hooker's game-winning goal was also his first goal of the season
  • Kevin Cela is currently tied with Elias Taubo for the most assists with two
  • Luca Falagrady finished the match with four saves
  • Kristian Hooker led the team with five shots on goal
  • The Rangers finished with nine corner kicks; their third game with nine or more corner kicks this season
Up Next: The Regis Rangers open up conference play on Sept. 21 with a match at cross-town Rival MSU-Denver.

"It's always great to get a win before conference play, but the message to the guys is as you enter RMAC play, it's a totally new season," Diem said. "Regardless of what happened in our non-conference play, the RMAC is a new season and anything can happen. We want to be fighting for championships come the end of October."
