No. 19 Rangers roll to a sweep of South Dakota Mines to open Blue & Gold Weekend

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 19 ranked Regis University volleyball team kept up its winning ways on Friday, extending its season-long win streak to eight with a sweep of South Dakota School of Mines to begin Blue & Gold Weekend.

Regis (9-4 overall, 5-0 RMAC), tied atop the RMAC standings alongside No. 2 ranked MSU Denver, hit .333 as a team on Friday while, defensively, held the visiting Hardrockers (4-10 overall, 1-5 RMAC) to a miniscule .043 attack percentage.

"It was a good win for us. I thought South Dakota Mines did a good job of executing its game plan — we struggled to defend some of the things they threw at us — but I thought out girls did a great job of executing our game plan, as well," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "I thought we maybe forced some things in the second set, but we adjusted and played a lot cleaner after that."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers featured a balanced attack on Friday, with three players finishing with nine or more kills, led by junior outside hitter Halle Theis with 12 kills on just 22 attempts (.409 attack percentage).

Regis dictated the action much of the evening, rolling to set wins of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20. The team finished with a 4-1 advantage in service aces and consistently peppered the Hardrockers back row in serve receive.

"We were really focused on our serve and it got them (Hardrockers) a little out of system, which in turn helped our defense," List said. "I thought we did a nice job with our block tonight (10-4 block advantage), as well. Ten blocks is really good for three sets. We worked on that this week knowing it would be important."

Sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis led the Rangers with two solo blocks and a block assist, while graduate student Klaudia Sowizral (four block assists) and senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink (six block assists) paced the front row.

That trio of middle blockers were also a huge offensive weapon for the Rangers as Sowizral tallied four kills, Burbrink added nine kills (.563 hitting percentage) and Davis was the second Regis player in double-figures with 10 kills on Friday.

"The mantra of the team this year has been relying on a lot of different people each night. Halle had a good night and then, if we're able to set our middles, then our defense is doing a good job," List said.
The maestro of the Rangers offense, senior setter Mara LeGrand, finished her evening with two kills and 32 of the team's 34 assists.

UP NEXT: Regis will look to close out Blue & Gold Weekend with another victory on Saturday when it hosts Black Hills State University. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside the Regis Field House.

"Saturday will be fun with it being Alumni Night for us and with Denene Jacovetta (1983-86) going into the Hall of Fame later that night, so it'll be important for us to play well," List said. "We want all of our alums to be proud of who they played for so we'll try to put it all together again tomorrow."
