LeGrand reaches career milestone, No. 19 Rangers crush to sweep of Black Hills

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 19 ranked Regis University volleyball team was on a mission Saturday. With dozens of past Rangers packing the stands on Alumni Night, the team wanted to put their best foot forward.

With a 25-16, 25-12 and 25-11 drubbing of Black Hills State University (2-12 overall, 1-5 RMAC), the Rangers (10-4 overall, 6-0 RMAC) accomplished just that as they cruised to their ninth straight victory.

"Throughout the match we got better and better. And by the end of the third set; that looked exactly like how we want to play," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "As a coach, I'm never satisfied. If we can get to that level a little sooner I'd be happier, but I give a ton a ton of credit to the team. They knew tonight was important for us and they went and executed."

HOW IT HAPPENED: For the third time this season, the Rangers hit over .400 as a team with a .402 attack percentage, tallying 40 kills and just seven errors on 82 swings.

Junior outside hitter Halle Theis led all players with 10 kills, while the middle blocker duo of Nadine Burbrink and Amelia Davis each added nine kills and joined Theis is hitting over .300 individually.

Graduate student middle blocker Klaudia Sowizral and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Kepler added five kills and four kills, respectively, while senior setter Mara LeGrand chipped in three kills on what was a historical evening for the Omaha native.

After posting 35 assists on Saturday, LeGrand became just the 10th player in program history to eclipse 2,500 career assists in a career. She currently sits 10th with 2,523 assists; 77 shy of Tara Gonzales for ninth on the all-time list.
"If you hit .400 as a team, a lot of things have to go right. Mara did a great job distributing, getting the ball to hitters when they're on and getting everyone involved. I'm happy for her reaching this milestone," List said. "I love her humbleness as a setter. She's always willing to work and get better. If you asked her, she'd say she's still not as good as she wants to be. Every great athlete is going to say that. Add in her athleticism and her instincts it makes her one of the best setters in our conference."

And while the LeGrand and the Rangers' attack was firing on all cylinders, one of the big keys to the night came at the service line where Regis finished with nine aces — one off the team's season high of 10 — and persistently kept the Yellow Jackets from being able to play in rotation.

Black Hills State finished the night with a -.052 hitting percentage with just 15 kills and 19 errors.

"We've really been focusing on our serve. When we play good teams, we've got to be able to serve tough and while working on that, in return, we've been facing tough serves in serve receive," List said. "Moving forward over the next couple of weeks we need to continue to serve tougher and I thought we did a good job with that tonight. We have 4-6 really good servers right now that definitely makes things easier."

Defensively, senior libero Haley Kennedy popped up a game-high 15 digs and true freshman defensive specialist Kylie Stremmel followed with seven digs.

UP NEXT: Regis will take a one-day road trip down I-25 South on Friday to square off against a good Colorado State University Pueblo squad currently third in the RMAC standings at 11-2 overall and 4-1 in conference. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Rangers then conclude next weekend with a 3 p.m. home match on Saturday against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

"Next week will be tough and we need to continue to serve tough, serve receive tough balls and then respond when teams come at us in one specific realm," List said. "Whether teams have attacked our block, a particular defense or with serves, we've got to be able to respond to that and those will be the things we'll work on next week."
