No. 17 Rangers show resilience in 3-1, come-from-behind road win over CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. — The No. 17 ranked Regis University volleyball team earned a resilient 3-1 road win over (RV) Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday, bouncing back from a Set One loss and rallying from deficits in each of the final three sets to keep its 10-match winning streak alive.

With the win, Regis (11-4 overall, 7-0 RMAC) also avenged a five-set loss suffered last November in the RMAC tournament quarterfinals to the ThunderWolves (13-3 overall, 6-2 RMAC).

"It was an important win for a lot of reasons. For the history of the matchup — they were the team that kicked us out of the RMAC Tournament last year — and it was a big road game," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "They are a good team that keeps getting better every year. We started a little slow and that was kind of the story of the whole match, but I'm proud of the team for fighting back to get the win."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers dropped the opening set, 25-23, and were in danger of falling behind 2-0 in the match as they stared at a 19-10 deficit late in Set Two.

After a kill by senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink forced a sideout and made it a 19-11 score, freshman defensive specialist Kylie Stremmel delivered five straight quality serves — including four consecutive aces — that flipped the script of the Rangers' evening.

Regis would crawl all the way back to take the lead at 22-21 and hold on for a 25-23 win in Set Two, evening the match at a set apiece.

Stremmel set new career highs with 12 digs and those four key aces.

"That was the turning point," List said of Stremmel's run. "A freshman, with all that on her shoulders, she played like she was a senior. And she was digging up some balls too, it wasn't just her serve, that really changed the momentum. Kylie has really been working hard in practice, conditioning and the weight room and hasn't gotten enough credit so it was great to see her do that tonight."

The Rangers capitalized on the momentum change, earning a 25-16 win in the third set, before again being faced with the challenge of a 7-0 hole in Set Four. Regis rallied back to tie the set at 12-12, and created some separation with a 4-0 blitz to take an 18-14 lead late in the set, en route to a 25-21 clinching victory.

"We were making a lot of unforced errors to begin the fourth set. Once we cleaned that up, I thought out team did a good job of keeping our composure," List said.

Three Rangers would finish with double-digit kill totals on Friday, led by junior outside hitter Halle Theis with 18. She'd add 16 digs to complete her fifth double-double of the season.
Burbrink added 10 kills and graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral finished with a season-high 11 kills on a .259 attack percentage.

"Klaudia had a great night. CSU Pueblo was really keying on our middles, we were struggling to get kills there, so Klaudia's performance was really instrumental for us," List said.
Senior setter Mara LeGrand added six kills and 11 digs to go with her 47 assists Friday while, defensively, senior libero Haley Kennedy paced five Rangers in double-figures with 24 digs.

UP NEXT: Regis will have a quick turnaround as it heads back up I-25 to host the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 3 p.m. Saturday inside the Regis Fieldhouse. It'll mark the second matchup of the season between the Rangers and Mountain Lions after Regis defeated UCCS, 3-1, back on Sept. 10 down in Colorado Springs.
