SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Regis University men's soccer team played their fourth and final match of their road trip against California State University-San Marcos on Sunday but came up short in a 2-1 loss.

How It Happened: The Rangers wasted no time attacking the net with a goal in the third minute by Michael Jimenez coming off a beautiful pass from Ethan Willson

"It was a great team goal. Michael got himself into a dangerous area in the box and showed great technical ability to create some separation and finished his chance well," said Regis men's soccer head coach Taylor Diem.

The Cougars were also quick to the draw, scoring their first goal of the game in the seventh minute. The game-winner for the Cougars would come in the 21st minute.

"Have to give credit to San Marcos, they were organized and defended well but I know everyone's feeling like we left 3 points on the board," said Diem.

The second half remained quiet as the Rangers picked up on defense and limited the Cougars to only two shots.

"At half time we talked about putting the first half behind us and focusing on the remaining 45 minutes and I thought we came out during the second half well," said Diem. "We created a lot of chances, but unfortunately lacked the drive necessary to get on the end of throngs in the opponent's box."

Game Notes:

  • Michael Jimenez scored his first goal of the season
  • Luca Falagrady finished with two saves in the net
  • Rangers outshot the Cougars 17-9, seven of which were shots on goal
  • Michael Jimenez led the Rangers in shots on goal with three

Up Next: The Rangers return home on Thursday, Sept. 8 with a match against Seattle Pacific University at 7:00 PM.
