Rangers hand Orediggers first RMAC loss, earn first win over ranked opponent since 2016-17

DENVER, Colo. –The Regis University women's basketball team handed the #7/9 Colorado School of Mines' first conference loss of the season on Friday night, defeating the Orediggers, 76-64.

With the win, the Rangers (10-5 overall, 7-2  RMAC) improve to second overall in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. The Orediggers (13-2 overall, 9-1 conference) are just ahead at #1 but the loss snaps their 11-game win streak dating back to Nov. 25.

Friday's win over the Orediggers is also Regis' first win over a nationally ranked opponent since their win over #5 CSU-Pueblo on March 5, 2016.

"I think for us to put 40 minutes together, without any major dips and being able to weather storms much quicker was great. Not only in the second half, I thought we defended well in the first half and did a great job against an excellent offensive team," said women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin. "Mines is known for their defense and being able to take care of the ball and only have 15 turnovers and finish with 17 assists was our number one goal. We certainly took care of the ball in the second half when they put a lot more pressure on us. That was a big step forward for us in the growth of our team."

How It Happened: A 21-2 run in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference maker on Friday as the Rangers flipped a five-point deficit going into the fourth in their favor. After nine minutes, seven free throws, three layups, and two three-pointers, the Rangers earned themselves a 13-point lead with one minute left in the fourth.

"The girls decided that they were going to get stops. We weren't going to give up offensive rebounds. The girls did a great job keeping them in spurts off the boards, we opened up the fourth quarter with six straight stops," said Marrin. "That gave us a lot of confidence and we were able to build on that and capitalize off our defense."

And capitalize off their defense they did, the Rangers kept the Orediggers to their lowest field-goal percentage of the entire season (.329). For reference, the Orediggers were shooting .404 on the season going into Friday's game.

In addition to the Orediggers' limited field goal percentage, the Rangers were also aggressive at the glass, out-rebounding Mines, 51-41. Not only were the 51 rebounds a season-high, but 38 of those were defensive rebounds.

"We got the stops we needed to get. I think we forced them into taking tough shots and some of their key contributors had lower field goal percentages than I've seen all year. It was making them make tough shots and finishing the defensive play with a rebound," said Marrin. "A lot of times the team that is leading the league in rebounds wins the league. Mines has always been great at it and we knew that that was something we had to take care of. Taking care of the basketball and outrebounding them were our two main goals and we did it."

To support their defensive efforts, the Rangers had four players in double-digit points lead by senior guard Josey Ryan with a career-high 23 points on the night. Junior guard Erin Fry was right behind her with 20 while also dishing out a team-high nine assists.

"[Ryan] heckles me a lot so I know she's playing a lot looser than she was," said Marrin. "She's playing light and her and [Erin] Fry have built some great chemistry in the back court. She just needed that belief in her and she's stepped up."

Game Notes:
  • Erin Stroberg posted her third double-double of the season with ten points and 13  rebounds
  • Senior forward Sam Deem was the fourth Ranger in double-figures with 10 points
  • Friday's win snaps Regis' seven-game losing streak against the Orediggers
  • The Rangers spent over 25 minutes with the lead to the Orediggers' 11
  • Regis' 38 defensive rebounds was the most since UCCS on Nov. 18 (37)
  • Sammy Van Sickle posted a season-high 22 points while shooting 50 percent from the floor
Up Next: The Rangers host cross-town rival MSU-Denver on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 5:00 PM.

"It's always a battle, playing a cross-town rival, we know that. They know us well, we know them well," said Marrin. "I think that they're playing a mostly four guard line-up and we've got some more size so it'll be how do we capitalize with our size and be able to guard their quickness. It'll be the same keys we've had the last few weeks which is taking care of the basketball and outrebounding."
