Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Caty Llamas, Athletics Graduate Assistant

Late fourth quarter surge pushes Rangers ahead of MSU Denver, 63-60

DENVER, Colo. – A late fourth quarter surge was all the Regis University women's basketball team needed on Friday to defeat Metropolitan State University-Denver, 63-60 and extend their win streak to seven.

The Rangers improve to 11-5 overall and 8-2 in the RMAC while the Roadrunners fall to 5-5 in the RMAC and 7-9 overall.

"It was a choppy game and didn't have the flow that some of the others have had so I'm proud that we stuck with it and continued to get stops especially in the fourth," said women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin. "Outscoring them 18-6 in the fourth, and outscoring [No. 7/9 Colorado School of Mines] 28-10 in the fourth on Friday, speaks to our toughness and determination to keep fighting. This team has no quit in it and I would buy a season ticket to watch them play."

How It Happened: Saturday night got off to a sluggish start as the Rangers finished the first half trailing by seven (38-31) and trailed by nine entering the fourth at 54-45.

The Rangers would trail by as many as 11 points early in the fourth before they flipped the script. Regis countered with a strong 13-3 run that spanned six and a half minutes, capped by a jumper from junior guard Erin Fry to even the score at 58 with 3:26 remaining.

At the 2:55 mark, a bounce pass from La Vista-native Sam Deem found its way to graduate student Erin Stroberg in the paint and ended with Stroberg putting it away to put the Rangers ahead, 60-58.

With the score tied at 60, Fry would put the Rangers on top for good as she broke through two Roadrunner defenders and finish a contested layup to put Regis ahead, 62-60, with 30.5 seconds remaining.

The Regis defense would step up and make back-to-back stops in the final 30 seconds to seal the 63-60 final. The Rangers held MSU Denver scoreless over the final 2:28.
Stroberg and fellow forward Sydney Speights made huge contributions off the bench as the duo scored 16 total points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

"Sydney and Stroberg had huge efficient contributions off the bench for us in the post," said Marrin. "I told our team in the locker room that I believe we have the best post position group in the league and we play best when we have that balance with them."

Game Notes:
  • The Rangers scored a whopping 42 points in the paint to MSU's 24
  • Erin Fry and Erin Stroberg both finished in double digit points at 19 and 10 respectively
  • Sam Deem led all Rangers in rebounds with 11
Up Next: The Rangers host Colorado Christian University on Jan. 20 at 5:00 PM.
"We are going to enjoy this one tonight and tomorrow but trust me we will be focused and ready to prepare for CCU and Chadron on Monday," said Marrin. "A team win and players' win is where the credit goes."
