Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – When it rains it pours for the Regis University women's basketball team as they scored 46 points in the second half to win the Friday night matchup against the Adams State Grizzlies, 73-68.
Triggered by a third quarter run that saw 26 points, the Rangers (8-5 overall, 5-2 RMAC) stretched their win streak to four while snapping the Grizzlies' (9-4 overall, 5-2 RMAC) eight-game win streak at home.
"I'm incredibly proud of the toughness, teamwork and resilience we showed tonight as a team. Not only that, but our bench energy was amazing. This group truly plays with and for each other," said women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin.
How It Happened: Trailing 27-38 at the half and with 10:56 left in the game, the Rangers took the lead and ran with it while preventing the Grizzlies from getting any closer than three points to evening the score.
At the 9:45 mark in the third, junior guard Madison Diercks set fire to the Rangers' offense with a layup off a textbook pass from Wray-native, Morgan L. Smith to start the 17-7 run that put the Rangers within one.
With 3:30 remaining, junior guard Erin Fry snagged a defensive rebound and 17 seconds later, second-year Athena Saragoza sunk a three-pointer that put the Rangers ahead of the Grizzlies, 47-45.
Adams State didn't go away quietly, however, as two made free throws put Adams State ahead, 51-50. That lead didn't last long as Fry took care of business and broke through a couple of defenders in the paint and nailed a driving layup to reclaim the lead.
"We knew how hard it is to play here and how tough Adams plays, especially defensively. I thought we adjusted well at halftime and did a better job finding the open player with the traps," said Marrin. "We weathered their runs a lot better in the second half and definitely leaned in to our strengths."
Fry's 20 points on the night led all Rangers in scoring, but it certainly wasn't a solo effort. Senior guard Josey Ryan contributed 16 of her own while Saragoza finished with 13 on the night.
"Erin [Fry] has a remarkable ability to lock in and handle pressure, sometimes even with triple teams, and get the ball to the right player. She continues to improve and I'm so impressed by her maturity on and off the court," said Marrin. "She is truly special."
Game Notes:
- Morgan L. Smith led all Rangers in rebounds with 11
- The Rangers' 45 rebounds ties for the third-most this season
- Regis' 26 points in the third ties for the most points in the third quarter this season
Up Next: The Rangers continue south to Durango and play the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks on Saturday, Jan. 7. The second game of the southwest road trip tips off at 5:30 PM at Whalen Gymnasium.
"Fort Lewis is playing really well on both ends of the floor. They mix things up a lot defensively so I think tonight definitely prepares us for a tough game tomorrow," said Marrin.
