DURANGO, Colo. – With their fifth win in a row on the horizon, graduate student forward Erin Stroberg took the reins and led the Regis University women's basketball team to a road victory over the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks, 60-50.
With the win, the Rangers improve to 9-5 overall, and 6-2 in the RMAC while the Skyhawks fall to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC. The Rangers' last loss came on Dec. 9 in a 66-65 loss to Westminster College at the Regis Field House.
"Our players came back hungry and ready to raise our level after Christmas break and I think it's showing in the win streak," said women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin. "We are learning how to better play through adversity and adjust. The team deserves all of the credit for these wins and the strides we're making."
According to the department's single-game statistics, Stroberg's 21 rebounds sets a new program record. The previous record was 20 rebounds held by Denise Lopez and set on Feb. 5, 2005.
How It Happened: With the lead changing eight times over the 40 minutes, both teams fought to the end but ultimately the Rangers had the grit to pull out the win.
Stroberg charged ahead for the blue and gold and earned her third double-double of the season. The Rockford-native led the Rangers in scoring with 18 points and going 5-for-9 from the paint (56%) while also securing the program-record 21 rebounds.
"She [Stroberg] had an unbelievable and inspiring performance tonight, especially on the offensive rebounds. She is competitive, relentless, always talking on defense, and an excellent finisher around the rim," said Marrin. "I'm extremely proud of the growth and commitment to the team. She undoubtedly raised our level in the second half and played with a true will to win."
The Rangers went into the second half trailing by three, but the Skyhawks' lead didn't last long as two free throws from junior guard Erin Fry at the 3:53 mark put the Rangers up by one to make it 32-31.
A jumper by FLC's Kaitlyn Bell put the Skyhawks back in contention, but a layup from Stroberg put the Rangers back on top, 34-33.
The jumper from Bell would be the last time the Skyhaws were ahead as the Rangers took care of business and put the game away, going on a 5-2 run to finish the third and not letting the Skyhawks get any closer than four points in the fourth quarter and inflating the margin to 10.
At the glass, the Rangers out-rebounded the Skyhawks, 50-45. Those 50 total rebounds marked a season-high for the Rangers while the 32 defensive rebounds were the second highest on the season.
Of those 32 defensive rebounds, the Rangers were able to convert 11 fastbreak points to the Skyhawks' 2 points from 28 defensive rebounds.
Game Notes:
- The Rangers scored exactly half of their total points in the paint (30)
- Regis' lineup currently features four of the top 25 scorers in the conference (Erin Fry (8), Erin Stroberg (22), Josey Ryan (23), Sam Deem (25))
- The Rangers' bench contributed 23 points on the night
