Rangers finish with 15 shots but come up short against the Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Regis University men's soccer team took on the Westminster University Griffins on Sunday, but fell short at the final whistle, 1-0.

The Rangers (2-6-2 overall, 0-1-1 RMAC) out shot the Griffins, 15-12, including seven shots on goal, but were unable to get past the Griffins' (5-3-2 overall, 2-0 RMAC) goalkeeper and find the back of the net.

How It Happened: The Rangers traded shots back and forth with the Griffins for the first 15 minutes of the match, with graduate student forward Vilhjalmur Kaldal and freshman Liam Corr each getting a chance at the net.

The Griffins scored their one and only goal during the 13th minute off a shot to the lower left corner of the goal.

Regis refused to go down without a fight, however, as they proceeded to take five more shots at the net from four different Rangers and forced the Griffins' goalkeeper to make several saves.

Graduate student forward Ben Shepherd, Kaldal, Corr, and New Zealand-native Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit combined for the five shots. Kaldal accounted for two while the rest all had one shot apiece.

At the half, the Rangers had accumulated seven shots to Westminster's six.

Regis continued in its relentless pursuit of its first goal of the match, with another eight shots in the remaining 45 minutes.

Westminster's goalkeeper and defensive line proved to be impenetrable as the minutes wound down and the Rangers were unable to get their sought after goal.

Game Notes:

  • Rangers out shot the Griffins, 15-12 and in shots on goal, 7-3
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Cristian Sattin finished the match with two saves
  • Vilhjalmur Kaldal led all Rangers in shots with four while Liam Corr finished second with three

Up Next: The Rangers return home to Denver to host the Adams State University Grizzlies on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.
