Rangers earn crucial three points in 1-0 win over Adams State

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team earned a crucial three points on Thursday, opening their homestand against the Adams State University Grizzlies and taking the match, 1-0.

The Rangers (3-6-2 overall, 1-1-1 RMAC) took its chance at the goal a season-high 22 times, and broke through in the 80th minute, thanks to Iceland-native Vilhjalmur Kaldal, while preventing the Grizzlies (0-9-0 overall, 0-3-3 RMAC) from scoring and earning a crucial three points along the way.

"We're happy to take the three points away but overall, we're still a bit frustrated because we created a lot of chances and couldn't finish," said Regis men's soccer head coach, Taylor Diem. "It's a game that if we take our chances earlier on, the game gets put to bed a little earlier. But a huge credit to the boys for the resilience and persistence they showed throughout the latter stages in the second half and going and finding the game-winner. Overall, happy with the result, it could've been better, but we'll always take the three points."

How It Happened: A productive offense and a staunch defense combined for 22 shots on the night, and the first shutout of the season for the Rangers.

In the first half, it was anyone's match as the Rangers put themselves in position, but couldn't find the back of the net. Of the 10 Rangers on the field, six of them had at least one shot.

Adams State was not going away quietly, however, as they accumulated an additional seven shots in the second half to bring their total to 13.

Kaldal sealed the deal for the Rangers after a well-placed pass found him at the top of the 18-yard box. While dancing through a couple of Grizzlies defenders, Kaldal maintained possession and found himself in open space to strike with his right foot to find the bottom right corner of the net.

"His goal was massive," said Diem. "If you look at the game and how it was going, we were knocking on the door for large parts of the second half and eventually it felt like the dam was going to break. Credit to Villy, he got the ball, and in a 1v1 moment, created a little separation and calmly finished off the shot. I'm really happy, that's the quality that a player like Villy has in the final third and something we hope to see more of in the next few games."

Within the final nine minutes, the Grizzlies had two close chances within the six-yard box but sophomore goalkeeper Cristian Sattin made a diving save and the team came through for a team save to eliminate any more opportunities.

Sattin was a crucial piece to the Rangers' defense, racking up a total of four saves on the night and leading Regis to its first clean sheet of the season.

"The goalkeeper position has been back and forth all year," said Diem. "Having multiple quality goalies at your disposal means you're always trying to figure out which one is best for the matchup. Today, in the second half, Adams State threw a lot of balls in the box but overall, Cristian managed the backline well and he took care of things that came into his area. Ultimately, I'm really happy that he was able to get the first clean sheet of the season."

Game Notes:
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Cristian Sattin earned his first shutout as a Ranger with four saves
  • Eight of the 13 Rangers who made an appearance tonight had at least one shot
  • Rangers led the Grizzlies in corner kicks, 7-3

Up Next: The Rangers continue conference play on Sunday when they host Fort Lewis College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.

"Fort Lewis is off to a really strong start and the conversation amongst us right now is we know we won't have as many chances," said Diem. "Against teams like Fort Lewis, Mesa, and teams like that, we have to find ways to take care of our chances when we get them and we expect Fort Lewis to come at us with everything they have. It's going to be a difficult game for us but if we can do things right in certain areas I'll always say we can beat anyone in the conference."
