Rangers earn split on the weekend, O'Toole scores his first goal of the season

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team hosted the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks on Sunday, dropping the match, 3-1, but were able to come away with a split on the weekend.

The Rangers (3-7-2 overall, 1-2-1 RMAC) were knocking on the door to score, and finally broke through a tough Skyhawks (7-2-2 overall, 3-0-1 RMAC) defense late in the second half to give junior forward Brendan O'Toole his first goal of the season, but Regis' lone score of the match.

"We knew that coming out against a team like Fort Lewis was going to take a certain energy level and intensity and I just feel like we didn't hit those levels until it was a bit too late," said Regis men's soccer head coach, Taylor Diem. "Credit to them, they played well, they punished us for mistakes we made and took their chances when they got them. Ultimately, it's a reflection of ourselves and I don't feel like we showed up until the last 10 minutes and at that point, we were creating a few, maybe could've gotten things closer, but ultimately we waited too long to turn it on."

How It Happened: A late surge for the Rangers saw their offensive opportunities go from two shots in the first half, to 14 in the second for a total of 16 shots on the day.

The sole ball to hit the back of the net was from O'Toole, after a well-placed pass from junior forward Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit found O'Toole across the box. The Parker-native put the finishing touch on the shot with his right foot to connect with the top right corner of the net.

"That goal is great for Brendan. He's spent the last few weeks out with an injury so it was good to get him back on the field," said Diem. "I felt like when he came on in the second half he changed things for us. He went at guys, he opened up spaces, he got to the end line and ultimately put himself in a really good position to score his first goal this season. I'm really, really happy with his first performance after being out for so long."

The Rangers did not go down without a fight, however, as two back-to-back shots–seven seconds apart–from Carlson-Du Toit and Iceland-native Vilhjalmur Kaldal put Fort Lewis' goalkeeper to the test in the 84th minute.

The offensive attack continued two minutes later as Kaldal and junior defender Matthew Bared also had back-to-back shots, only five seconds apart.

Tomas Duenes Gonzalez scored the first goal for the Skyhawks while Gabriel Legendre scored the remaining two for the Skyhawks.

"Overall, it was a weekend we felt like we could've gotten six points out of it against a team like Fort Lewis. If you don't show up and you give them opportunities they're going to punish you for it," said Diem. "In that sense, three points out of the six is good but I still think we left a lot on the table in terms of being able to show more and potentially putting ourselves in a position to get those six points which is huge."

Game Notes:
  • The Rangers led the Skyhawks in shots, 16-15, and in shots on goal, 6-5
  • Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit led all Rangers in shots with five
  • Regis' 16 shots on the day ties for the second-most on the season

Up Next: The Rangers will travel out to Golden, Colo. to take on the Colorado School of Mines on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.

"Regroup and we go again. The games come so fast that you don't really have time to sulk on what's in the past," said Diem. "The goal is to put this past us, watch some film and see where we can be better. Ultimately we want to be prepared to play against a really tough, competitive team at Mines on Thursday."
