No. 11 Regis sweeps Westminster to extend win streak to 10 straight

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The No. 11 ranked Regis University volleyball team pushed its winning streak to 10 in a row Friday evening, opening a weekend road trip with a 3-0 sweep of Westminster University out in Salt Lake City.

Regis (13-3 overall, 6-0 RMAC) held the Griffins (6-12 overall, 3-5 RMAC) to a .089 hitting percentage on the night and was able to rotate in a total of 12 players, with many young and emerging Rangers leaving their imprint on the victory.

"We had a great contribution from a lot of new players (Friday). We switched around some lineups throughout the match, and that was wasn't just because we were leading. We needed a little oomph and I thought that helped, especially in the third set," said Regis head coach, Joel List.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Westminster was able to stay within striking distance through the early and middle portions of each set Friday evening. With the notable differences coming at the service line for the Rangers as they were able to string together timely service runs to build their cushions.

Trailing 11-6 in the first set, graduate student setter Haley Kennedy helped spark a quick 4-0 blitz that helped right the ship early on. Regis would go on another 4-0 burst later in the set with graduate student middle blocker Nadine Burbrink at the stripe to balloon its lead to 19-14 en route to a 25-19 win in the set.

"We had some tough serving from Haley in the first set, Nadine particularly in the second set and then a great run by Giselle (Cazares) in the third that helped get some separation we needed in each set," List stated.

After earning a 25-18 win in Set Two, but trailing 13-11 midway through the third, Giselle Cazares delivered the longest service run of the night as the Rangers rattled off nine straight points to take a commanding 20-13 lead and complete the sweep, 25-16.

Offensively, the Rangers were led by senior outside hitter Hannah Kepler and graduate student right side hitter Klaudia Sowizral with 11 kills apiece, while Burbrink added to her fine evening with 10 kills and a team-high 2.5 blocks.

Graduate student setter Mara LeGrand tallied 31 assists and four digs, with Kennedy paced the back row with 14 digs.

Freshman setter/defensive specialist Elie King would follow with eight digs; tying her season high previously set against CSU Pueblo and Wayne State College earlier this fall.
"Westminster hit a lot of cross-court shots from the right side, which we haven't seen a lot of teams do, and Elie did a great job handling those and got a lot more digs," List said.

UP NEXT
Regis will conclude the road trip Saturday with a trip out to Grand Junction to square off against No. 10 ranked Colorado Mesa University (17-1 overall, 7-1 RMAC) in a match with early playoff implications at stake as the teams reach the midway points of the conference season.

"It's always fun to play at Colorado Mesa because of the crowds they get and I think we all know the importance of it being an RMAC match," List said. "We've just got to be focused on playing our game because that's when we're at our best and the rest will come."
