No. 11 Rangers tally season-high 14 blocks, but fall in four sets on the road to No. 10 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — In a rivalry battle between two of the top Division II teams in the country, No. 10 Colorado Mesa University was able to fend off No. 11 Regis University, snapping a season long 10-match win streak for the Rangers on Saturday evening out in Grand Junction.

The loss snapped a mini two-match winning streak for Regis (13-4 overall, 6-1 RMAC) against the Mavericks (18-1, 8-1 RMAC), who are now 4-0 on their home floor against the Rangers dating back to 2018.

Regis, which entered the night first in the RMAC in team hitting percentage (.280), had an uncharacteristic evening on the offensive side of the net, finishing the match at a season-low .126 hitting percentage with 41 kills and 22 errors on 151 total attempts.

"What's happened the last couple times we've played here is that we'll be really good in spurts, which is what happened again tonight. We got off to a lead in the first set, but Colorado Mesa coming back to win that set didn't really set a great tone," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We just really put together a consistent push. I think it was a little frustrating for the team that we would know what (Colorado Mesa) was about to do, or we knew what we wanted to do, but we were struggling to execute it."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis came out of the gates strong in the opening set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and holding a 9-3 at one point before Colorado Mesa came roaring back on a 9-2 blitz to recapture the lead at 12-11.

The two teams continued to trade jabs, with the Rangers holding their last lead as late as 20-18 on a kill from senior outside hitter Halle Theis. But it would be the Mavericks who would close on a 7-3 run to take Set One, 25-23.

Colorado Mesa would ride that momentum into Set Two, never trailing en route to a 25-20 win to go up 2-0 in the match.

Regis responded in the third set as the team tallied five of its season-high 14 blocks, and held Colorado Mesa to its lowest hitting percentage of the match (.145), in a 25-22 win that forced a fourth set.

"I called a timeout in the middle of that third set and I thought the team did a really job responding to that," List said. "I told them, 'Ladies, this is like Groundhogs Day from first set.' Credit to them for being able to turn it around. We just weren't able to keep our foot on the gas in the fourth set with the momentum we had built."

The Rangers were again able to get off to a fast start to open the fourth, leading by three at 9-6, and as late as 11-10, but were unable to sustain the momentum as they fell by a 25-18 final.
