Six players finish with five or more kills, No. 12 Rangers knock off Fort Lewis to open weekend

DENVER, Colo. — Back inside the friendly confines of the Regis Fieldhouse, the No. 12 Regis University volleyball team started work on a new win streak, knocking off Fort Lewis College in straight sets Friday to open the home stand.

Regis (14-4 overall, 7-1 RMAC) hit .330 on the evening, producing 39 kills on just 88 swings while also racking up seven aces as a team in what was a strong bounce-back performance from last weekend's split road trip at Westminster and No. 9 Colorado Mesa.

"Coming off a loss from last weekend, the team took this week pretty serious. We had some things we needed to work on and it was good to play against Fort Lewis because they played right into some of the things we did need work on, like slides from the right side and defending an outside attack," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "Those were some things we struggled with last week, but I thought we did a better job (Friday)."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers and Skyhawks each traded punches in the first set, with Fort Lewis producing 13 kills on a .257 attacking percentage and the Rangers hitting a match-high .414 in the opening set, squeaking out a 25-22 win.

Graduate student right side hitter Klaudia Sowizral tallied four of her team-high 10 kills in Set One, leading what was six different Rangers who finished with five or more kills Friday.

The Regis defense then tightened the screws over the final two sets, holding Fort Lewis to just five kills in a 25-12 win in Set Two.

In the third set, the Rangers' block took over as the team posted three of their eight total blocks in the set while forcing the Skyhawks into a match-high eight attack errors, salting the match away with a 25-20 win.

Regis also dominated the service line on Friday, finishing with a 7-3 edge in aces. Junior defensive specialist Bre Skala led all players with three aces, while the quartet of Haley Kennedy, Mara LeGrand, Nadine Burbrink and Elie King all added one apiece.

GAME NOTES
  • LeGrand notched her eighth double-double of the 2023 season with 11 digs to go with her 31 assists. She also produced five kills on just six attempts (.833).
  • Kennedy lead all Rangers with 12 digs, followed by LeGrand and King (nine digs).
  • Junior middle blocker Amelia Davis added to her team lead in blocks with four block assists.
UP NEXT
The Rangers conclude the home stand at 3 p.m. Saturday when they take on Western Colorado (4-15 overall, 2-7 RMAC) before the team preps for its final regional pod of the regular season next weekend against No. 6 ranked MSU Denver and No. 9 Colorado Mesa.

"Against Western, we need to play within ourselves but also be very aggressive while not making so many unforced errors. Tonight, we had too many errors whether they were from the service line, attack errors or net errors. It was a little messy from my point of view," List said. "But we need to stay aggressive. Sometimes when you tell a team to not make errors, they play very tentative. So there's a fine line to being aggressive while not making so many errors. That'll be the goal tomorrow."
