No. 12 Regis top Cougars in Friday night 'slugfest'

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team returned to action Friday evening, knocking off rival Colorado Christian University in straight sets, and in front of a packed house inside the Regis Fieldhouse for Pink Out Night.

Regis (11-3 overall, 4-0 RMAC) finished the evening with 45 kills and a .379 hitting percentage, while the visiting Cougars (6-9 overall, 2-3 RMAC) were a very respectable .240 with 38 kills in what head volleyball coach Joel List would call a "slugfest" offensively.

"CCU is a very good team. We had scrimmaged them earlier this year, but both teams kind of had some banged up kids, so we got to see it all tonight," List said. "We struggled a little bit with serve and pass at times, blocking their slide against the right side, and they did a great job taking advantage of that. But I was glad to see our girls come out with it."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two crosstown rivals battled each other tough much of the evening, with the Cougars pulling even with the Rangers in the first set as late as 17-17.

Holding a 21-20 lead, the Rangers closed the set on a mini 4-1 run, capped off by one of five service aces from graduate student libero Haley Kennedy to win the opener, 25-21.

The five service aces for Kennedy ballooned her team lead to 22 aces on the season and tied a career high previously set in August of 2022 against Sonoma State.

"To have five aces from one kid is amazing. Haley did a good job, a lot of her aces were on the drop serve, which was fun to watch and it created some easier opportunities to defend," List said. "We were good at the service line and that was kind of what opened the gap for us later in the third set."

After the Rangers cruised to a 25-14 win in Set Two, they were again pushed by the Cougars in Set Three as CCU held its largest lead of the match at 15-12.

Sophomore outside hitter Isabella Smith, who posted eight digs defensively, helped get the comeback started at the service line as the Rangers rattled off six straight points to retake an 18-15 lead.
Following a pair of side outs from each squad, Kennedy would lead another 4-0 burst for the Rangers to build a 22-16 lead, capped off by back-to-back aces.

Offensively, the Rangers featured a balanced attack Friday as five different players finished with seven or more kills, led by graduate student right side hitter Klaudia Sowizral with 11 kills on just 17 swings (.529 attack percentage).

Her fellow pin hitter, senior outside Halle Theis, and junior middle blocker Amelia Davis would each follow with nine kills apiece, while outside hitter Hannah Kepler and middle blocker Nadine Burbrink each added seven kills.

GAME NOTES
  • Graduate student setter Mara LeGrand posted two kills, eight digs, two blocks and 36 assists.
  • Regis won the blocking battle, 7-3, and held a 9-4 advantage in aces.
  • The Rangers currently sit second in the RMAC with a .275 hitting percentage as a team, just behind No. 10 Colorado Mesa (.276).
  • Kennedy led all Rangers with 11 digs, followed by eight apiece from LeGrand and Smith.
