Win streak extends to nine, No. 12 Rangers knock off Chadron State in four sets

DENVER, Colo. — Squaring off against an emerging Chadron State College squad, the No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team responded to the challenge on Saturday, shaking off a loss in Set One to roar back for a 20-25, 25-12, 25-15 and 25-16 victory over the Eagles to close out the home stand.

Saturday's victory marked the ninth straight win for Regis (12-3 overall, 5-0 RMAC), while the loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Eagles (10-6 overall, 5-2 RMAC).

"That's a really good Chadron State team and my hat is off to them. They did a great job of making us feel uncomfortable, not just in that first set, but I think the whole match that did a nice job making us uncomfortable," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "I thought our team did a great job adjusting to some of the things they were doing in that first set, we settled down a little bit and got a little cleaner."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Chadron State was able to put the Rangers on their heels to begin the afternoon as the Eagles jumped out to an 11-4 lead, hitting .226 while limiting the Regis attack to a .152 hitting percentage en route to a 25-20 win in Set One.

A veteran Regis squad would bounce back with a resounding 25-12 win in Set Two. The Rangers never trailed while the offense came to life to hit .389 for the set (18-4-36) while, defensively, they held the Eagles to a mere five kills and five errors on 33 attempts.

"I was glad to see us put in that scenario and it was good to see the team be very calm about it," said List, referring to the adversity of falling down 1-0. "Between sets, the players had a good conversation themselves and I loved that they were able to problem solve on their own. I have all the respect for the leaders on the team being able to step up, take each other aside, and handle that in a mature way."

The Rangers would keep on rolling in the third and fourth sets, earning victories of 25-15 and 25-16, respectively, while committing just one attacking error over the final two sets.

Regis finished the afternoon with a .377 attacking percentage as a team, led by its middle blocking tandem of graduate student Nadine Burbrink and junior Amelia Davis.

Burbrink led four Rangers in double-figures with 15 kills on a sizzling .542 hitting percentage, while Davis posted 11 kills on a staggering .733 attack percentage without committing an attack error on 15 swings.

Graduate student setter Mara LeGrand tallied 48 assists, giving her an even 12.0 assists per set for the match and for the weekend, to go with her four kills and 13 digs.

Joining Burbrink and Davis in double-digits for kills Saturday were senior outside hitter Halle Theis (13 kills) and graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral, who had four of her 11 kills in the clinching fourth set.

While the Rangers' offense was humming, the team was just as stout on the defensive end as they limited Chadron State to a .148 hitting percentage for the match while earning an 8-4 edge in total blocks and a 62-43 advantage in digs Saturday.

Graduate student libero Haley Kennedy paced the back row with a season-high 23 digs, while LeGrand (13 digs) and junior defensive specialist Bre Skala (11 digs) joined her in double-figures.
"It was good to see the defensive mindset that our team took that, 'Maybe we're doing well scoring points, but we've got to be able to defend as well.' I thought we did a good job making defense a priority tonight."

UP NEXT
The Rangers will now get ready for their first full weekend of RMAC road matches when the team travels out to face Westminster College (6 p.m. Friday) and No. 10 ranked Colorado Mesa (4 p.m. Saturday).
