Mayo Harmon pours in career-high 27, Rangers thump Barclay College in home opener

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team made its 2023-24 home debut on Saturday, knocking off the visiting Barclay College Bears, 109-74, in a high-scoring, back-and-forth track meet inside the Regis Fieldhouse.

For the Rangers (1-2 overall), the 109 points on Saturday are the eighth most in a single game in program history and the most since the team put up 110 points in a win over South Dakota Mines in December of 2015.

"It's been a really challenging week for our guys in practice. There were some things we saw last weekend that we knew we needed to tighten up and I liked our guys' response all week and today was kind of the culmination of that work," said Regis head men's basketball coach, Brady Bergeson. "I'm happy that we're moving in the right direction as a group in some really important ways."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Barclay College (0-4 overall) was able to hang around with the Rangers through the game's opening 14 minutes and change, trailing just 34-30 at the 6:11 mark, before Regis would build its cushion.

Regis pushed the lead to double digits at 50-40 with 2:09 remaining and closed the final 120 seconds on another 9-2 bust to take a 59-42 lead into the break, behind 17 first-half points by sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon.

Harmon was one of five Regis players to finish in double-figures on Saturday and led the way with a career-high 27 points on 9-for-17 shooting.

The Rangers picked up where they left off at the start of the second half, opening the final 20 minutes on a 16-2 run that ballooned the lead to 31 points at 75-44 with 15:15 remaining.

Barclay College would never inch any closer than 21 the rest of the way as Regis sealed its first win of the winter at 109-74.

Joining Mayo Harmon in double-figures for Regis was graduate student forward Tarig Eisa, who finished just two boards shy of a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes.

Freshman guard Jalen Brown added 13 points, as well, off the bench while the starting guard tandem of CJ Reed (12 points) and Ty Cox (11 points) rounded out the five Rangers in double-digits.

Defensively, Regis was able to shake off a tough first half where the team committed 16 personal fouls to play a solid final 20 minutes, limiting Barclay College to just 32 points on 39 percent shooting.

Redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun paced all players with four blocked shots, while the trio of Cox, Reed and Joshua Pearre added two steals apiece.

"We were getting exposed a little bit in that first half because, while we were playing hard, we were also playing a little undisciplined, defensively," Bergeson said. "I thought the guys responded at halftime, we limited our fouls to just six in the second half, which was a huge deal for us. We have to find that fine line between being able to pressure the ball and being able to pull back and not have undisciplined fouls."

GAME NOTES
  • Regis finished the night shooting 52 percent (38-for-73) from the field and 43 percent (12-for-28) behind the 3-point line.
  • The Rangers offense also posted 20 assists versus just 11 turnovers.
  • Regis dominated the interior, finishing with a 56-30 advantage in points in the paint.
  • Barclay College was held to 40 percent shooting (26-for-65) for the game and a mere 24 percent (7-for-29) from distance.
