GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team traveled to Grand Junction on Saturday to take on the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.
The Rangers (7-3 overall, 2-2 RMAC) rallied in the fourth quarter and amassed a total of 37 points, but were unable to overcome the Mavericks' (9-2 overall, 3-1 RMAC) offensive front.
"We know we didn't play our best half in the first but our second half and fight, our players have everything to be proud of," said Regis women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin. "We didn't fold. We competed hard and had a 37-point 4th quarter. Ultimately it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start. But I mean five in double figures and 14 assists and five turnovers was outstanding. I am proud of our resilience and how our team represented our university and program. "
How It Happened: The Mavericks inflated their lead to as many as 26 points, but an 11-0 scoring run that lasted almost two and a half minutes in the final 10 minutes brought the Rangers within five.
Junior guard Athena Saragoza shot almost 40% (3-for-8) from three while graduate student guard Josey Ryan led all Rangers in points with 18.
Regis was right on CMU's heels as they went 18-for-52 (34.6%) from the field, and then flipped thescript offensively and shot 66.7% (12-for-18) in the fourth quarter alone.
The Mavericks, however, shot their best game of the season, 58.2% (32-for-55), to also accumulate their most points in a game so far.
Regis had one more player finish in double-digits than the Mavericks, with five, including Ryan and Saragoza.
Ryan led all Rangers with 18 points, while graduate student guard Sam Deem finished with 16. Rounding out the five was Saragoza (15), senior guard Erin Fry (15), and Loves Park-native Madison Diercks (12).
Defensively, the Rangers finished with 32 rebounds while both Deem and Ryan tied with team-high six rebounds a piece.
"Our biggest takeaways were guarding specific defensive assignments better in the first half and knowing that we can score 53 points in a half to keep believing in each other. We have great teammates," said Marrin.
