Williams and Raper hit first home runs of the season, Rangers split doubleheader with Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The Regis University softball team returned to the lone star state on Friday to split a doubleheader with the St. Mary's University Rattlers. The Rangers (2-6 overall) took game one from the Rattlers (8-1 overall), 5-3, but would drop the second game later that afternoon, 6-3.

Sophomore Kylie Harpman took her second win of the season pitching six innings and only allowing four hits in the first game. Seven different Rangers combined for 14 hits over the two games, featuring two home runs from Rachel Williams in the first game, and Katherine Raper in the second game.

How It Happened | Game One:
With Harpman starting on the mound for the Rangers, Game One proved to be a pitcher's duel through three innings as Harpman struck out four Rattlers and St. Mary's was able to keep Regis' bats quiet.

However, Williams took the second pitch of her at-bat and sent it over the right field wall to kick-start the Regis offense. In the top of the fifth, freshman Sienna Reed doubled up the middle with Mia Moore coming in to pinch run.

Graduate student infielder Jessi Case continued the Regis attack after reaching on an error by the shortstop that advanced Moore to third. In a dangerous first-and-third situation, Case successfully stole second and pulled the attention way from Moore as she crossed the plate for Regis' second run.

St. Mary's answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own to make it 3-2 after five.

In the top of the sixth, the Rangers' bats stayed hot as freshman Olivia Wick singled to right field advancing sophomore transfer Abby Larsen who had walked earlier in the half inning.

Freshman second baseman Megan Clark came in clutch with a single up the middle to score two and put the Rangers on top for good at 4-3. Regis added another insurance run in the top of the seventh as Case doubled down the left field ling and Williams secured her second RBI of the game with Case scoring on Williams' groundout to second.

Harpman kept her cool despite loading the bases and struck out the last Rattler to secure the win, 5-3, to take game one in the doubleheader.

Game Notes
  • Freshman Megan Clark is on a hot streak with her fifth game in a row with at least one hit
  • Regis saw its first home run of the year from designated player Rachel Williams
  • Kylie Harpman tied her season-high strikeouts at five

How It Happened | Game Two:
The Rattlers quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off two hits. But the Rangers would put up a crooked number of their own in the top of the third as Wick was walked and junior Katherine Raper hit her first home run of the season to left center and evened the score at 2-2.

Regis took the lead in the top of the fourth after a single from Hannah Sisul and a single from Miia Campos put two Rangers on the bases and Williams did her job and singled down the right field line, scoring Sisul to make it 3-2.

The top of the fourth was the last time the Rangers would score as St. Mary's went on to score three more and end the game, 6-3.

Game Notes:
Up Next: The Rangers continue their Texas tour as they go to Austin to take on St. Edward's University in a doubleheader with the first game at 11:00 AM and the second at 1:00 P.M.
